George Thurow Obituary

CRYSTAL LAKE – George P. Thurow, 88, of Crystal Lake, died Sunday July 12, 2009, at Fair Oaks Health Care Center.

He was born Oct. 5, 1920, in Crystal Lake, to Carl and Anna (Kamholz) Thurow. On Aug. 31, 1951, he married Laura Freise in Schaumburg. He was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Crystal Lake.

He was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1942 and served with the 815th Engineer Aviation Battalion. During his service, he earned the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign ribbon and seven bronze stars for his participation in three invasions and seven battles during the Mediterranean and European theaters of war.

He was honorably discharged in October 1945, and his life embodied the motto of the Engineer Battalion: "The difficult we do immediately; the impossible takes but a little longer."

He worked as a supervisor in shipping and receiving for Process Engineering in Crystal Lake for many years until his retirement in 1986. He enjoyed bowling and coached baseball for the Crystal Lake Little League and the Babe Ruth League in Crystal Lake. He was a proud member of the Crystal Lake American Legion Post No. 171.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Laura; his sons, Thomas (Amy) and Roger (Anne); his grandchildren, Brian, Aishling, Jane, Maria; and his brothers, Donald (Rita) and Lawrence (Marilyn).

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Paul; his brothers, Ralph, Harold, Herbert, Carl and Clarence; and his sister, Bertha Dickerson.

The visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, at Querhammer & Flagg Funeral Home, 500 W. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake. The visitation will continue from 10 a.m. until the service at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 16, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 178 McHenry Ave., Crystal Lake. The Rev. Larry Tieman will officiate. Interment will be in McHenry County Memorial Park in Woodstock.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in his name to the church.
