Mary M. Grossen
Born: December 10, 1940 in Elgin, IL
Died: August 22, 2022 in Winfield, IL
On August 22, 2022, Mary Grossen, age 81, passed away at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, IL surrounded by her family.
On December 10, 1940, Mary Margaret was born to John and Alice Gehringer of Hampshire. She was one of nine children John and Alice were blessed with – she was #8. On September 30, 1961, Mary married Frank Grossen of Marengo. They spent nearly 60 years together as husband and wife.
Mary thoroughly enjoyed being surrounded by people. She often spoke to how hard it was leaving her parents' 'busy house' in Hampshire to come to Marengo to begin her next phase of life with Frank, but they quickly built a beautiful life for themselves, which included building their forever home, raising their three children, hosting parties with family and friends, snowmobiling and boating trips, and traveling at least a few times every year.
Mary embodied the definition of unselfish love. In her early married life, she spent her time supporting Frank as he started his own business and worked hard to keep a nice home for him and their children. During midlife, she spent many years in Hampshire helping to care for her aging parents. Later in life, she was proud to gain the title of Grandma and truly enjoyed time spent with her grandsons. She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, and friend who never missed a special occasion. She also found great joy in volunteering and helping those in need.
Mary had a deep commitment to her Catholic faith and spent much of her working life building and supporting the CCD program and later being the secretary at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. It is there were she connected with and supported many local families throughout the Marengo area. For many years, she attended daily Mass. Her excitement about being with the Lord and her departed loved ones is what is making her departure a bit easier for those left on Earth.
Mary is survived by her children – Scott Grossen of Shoreview, MN, Kelly Hall of Marengo, and Amy (Todd) Egan of Lake in the Hills; her grandsons – Cameron and Cole Egan; her brothers – Fritz (Alice) Gehringer of Cherry Valley, Hank (Judy) Gehringer of Hampshire, Ray (Janice) Gehringer of Sycamore; her brother-in-law Jack Green of Ingleside; and many dear nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and siblings Dorothy Jordahl, Albert Gehringer, George Gehringer, Helen Gehringer, and Carol Green.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 26, 2022, from 8:30am – 10:30am at the Marengo-Union Funeral Home at 505 E. Grant Hwy., Marengo. A Mass will follow at 11am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Marengo. Immediately following Mass, the rosary will be recited in church followed by a luncheon in the Parish Hall. A private burial among family and close friends will take place at a later date at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Marengo.
