Susan Jane Swinford - a loving, thoughtful, and kind soul from McHenry, IL - passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family, in the early morning hours of May 4, 2023.
The oldest of 5 children, Susan was born on November 27, 1939, in Evanston, IL, to James and Jane Levernier, who predeceased her. She graduated from New Trier High School in 1957, and it was only two years later that she was introduced to the love of her life, Charles Leroy Swinford, by her brother at the Northfield Bowling Alley.
On July 11, 1964, Susan and Charles tied the knot, and together they built a life filled with laughter, love, and family. Susan is survived by her loving husband Charles; her siblings James Levernier (Marcia), Nancy Sowls (Ronald), Michael Levernier (Patricia), and William Levernier (Janice); her children Deborah Swinford, Cindy Gingerich (Jon), Charlie Swinford, and James Swinford (Megan); her grandsons Justin Gingerich (Nicole) and Brandon Gingerich (Naomi); and her great-grandchildren Charlotte, Noah, Henry, and James.
In her earlier years, Susan was an avid bowler and enjoyed playing the accordion. As her children grew, Susan became heavily involved with 4-H and the McHenry County Fair, and eventually she became an ardent and active member of the Women's Committee of the McHenry County Farm Bureau. She also loved to knit and craft, thoroughly enjoyed flower gardening, and was an enormous dog lover.
Susan was passionate about her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, so it is very fitting that her love of gardening and crafts are shared by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Because Susan's joys have been passed down, they will continue to flourish and grow with each generation.
A gathering will take place Thursday, May 18, 2023, at Justen Funeral Home in McHenry, IL from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a Life Celebration service to happen at 7 p.m. Interment will be private at a later date at the IOOF Cemetery in Golconda IL.
