Verla M. Wehde-Caufield (Vander Streek), age 92, passed away peacefully after a short illness on Tuesday, March 30, 2021 with her children and their spouses at her bedside. She was in the wonderful care of Journey Care Hospice of Barrington, IL.
Verla is survived by her husband, Farlin Caufield; her loving children, John E. (Harle) Wehde and Amy (Kevin) Burkle; cherished grandchildren, Andrew (Caitlin) Wehde, Kimmie Wehde, Spencer Wehde, Cooper Wehde, Alex (Morgan) Burkle, Hannah (Larry) Wrather, and Emma Burkle; great-grandchildren, Cole and Reid Wehde and Eloise and Amelia Burkle.
Preceded in death by her beloved husband of almost 51 years, Carl E. Wehde; parents, Herman and Martha Vander Streek; and brother, Lloyd Vander Streek.
Verla was born on June 10, 1928 in Pella, Iowa, a Dutch settlement, where she and her brother Lloyd grew up on the family farm. Verla attended Central College in Pella where she met Carl Wehde after the war. Carl was the captain of the Central College football team and Verla was the Homecoming Queen. They met, dated and the rest is history. In 1960, they moved to Crystal Lake where she and Carl started Wehde Shoes in downtown Crystal Lake. Verla was very involved in many charitable organizations throughout her life including PEO, Central College
Trustees, Sherman Hospital Auxiliary, Northeast Hospice Trustees, and one of her most cherished causes, the development of the Raue Center in downtown Crystal Lake. Verla had many hobbies. She was an avid walker, knitter, a very good golfer, and an accomplished bridge player. But her role as grandmother, wife, and supporter of her husband Carl's civic leadership duties were her joy. Music also played an important role in her life. She was an incredible piano player and organist, playing the organ at many church functions. Verla's strong faith was with her for her entire life. She was raised in the Dutch Reform Church, an active member of the Crystal Lake Methodist Church, and finally the First Congregational Church in Crystal Lake.
She will be dearly miss by all who knew her.
Verla's family is in debt to Journey Care Hospice (Barrington, IL) for their wonderful care and understanding of the end-of-life. In lieu of flowers, any gifts to Journey Care in Verla's name would be cherished.
