Alexandra Newman

Alexandra Czarnecki Newman passed away May 18, 2024, surrounded by family at Heritage Court Memory Care, Eau Claire, WI. She was born May 7, 1941, in Gary, IN, to Pauline (Brilla) and Eugene Czarnecki. On September 23, 1966, she married H. Anthony Newman in Colorado Springs, CO, who proceeded her in death in 1990.
She was a graduate of Indiana State University (BS) and Indiana University (MS). She began her early career as an English, speech, and debate teacher in Wyoming and Indiana. She then stepped back and became a full-time mom for a few years. She started her newspaper career as a photojournalist for the Michigan City News Dispatch and later as a correspondent for the Post Tribune. Alexandra ended her career as Community Editor of the Chesterton Tribune. In between she wore many hats, including working at New York Life and the Chesterton Park Department, where she was the secretary.
Besides being a talented writer, Alexandra was nationally recognized as an expert pysanky artist (Ukrainian egg art). She was a member of the Association of Artists and Craftsmen of Porter County (Chesterton Art Center) for over 40 years and was also a board member of the Chesterton Art Center. A member of St. Elizabeth the New Martyr in Chesterton, she served on the church council. She also attended The Protection of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Church in Merrillville where she served on the church council, Sodality and O-Club.
Alexandra is proceeded in death by her husband, Anthony, and her parents.
She is survived by her daughter, Alexa (Arin Wilken) Newman; and son, Mark (Tracy) Newman; sister, Paula McHugh; grandchildren: Allison (Bradley) Rothaar and Peyton Newman; several nieces and nephews, including special nephews: Brian McHugh and Christopher McHugh; as well as many cousins and extended family.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. at St. Elizabeth The New Martyr Orthodox Church, 545 West Indiana Ave. Chesterton, IN. The family will receive friends from 8:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
Burial will follow at St. Mary's Russian Orthodox Cemetery, Gary, IN.
Memorial donations in honor of Alexandra may be given to: St. Elizabeth The New Martyr Orthodox Church or to St. Croix Hospice, Hospice Support Foundation: 7755-3rd St. N. Oakdale, MN, 55128.
