Claude Foreit Obituary

Dr. Claude Edward Foreit

Jul 6, 1934 - Jun 22, 2024

MUNSTER, IN - Dr. Claude Edward Foreit, DO, of Munster, IN, and Bradenton, FL, passed away peacefully at home on June 22, 2024.

He was born on July 6, 1934, in South Chicago, IL, to Dorothy Foreit (née Kukis). He was preceded in death by his beloved bride of 61 years, Barbara Jean Foreit (née Puchalski).

Claude was the proud father to Dr. Claude A. Foreit, Dr. Michael C. Foreit, Dr. David (Emily) Foreit, Mark (Jennifer) Foreit, Christopher Foreit, and Barbara A. Foreit. He was a loving grandfather to Vaughn, Logan, Jay Axel, Emri Claude, Madeline, Benjamin, Joshua, Anne, Samuel, Katherine, Jack, and Truman.

Claude spent his early years as a resident of the Carmelite Home for Boys in Hammond, IN. After graduating from the Detroit Institute of Technology College of Pharmacy, Claude worked as a pharmacist in South Chicago while attending the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, from which he graduated in 1959. He opened his private medical practices, Douglas Park Medical Center in Hammond, IN, and Lake Ridge Medical Center in Griffith, IN, where he treated and cared for his patients for 50 years. Many of his patients became dear and lifelong friends. He was the first DO on staff at St. Margaret Hospital, where he eventually led the Family Practice Department. In 1976, he formed and headed the Indiana Academy of Osteopathic General Practice (IAOGP), part of the Indiana Osteopathic Association.

Claude being an only child, cherished the large and beautiful family he and Barbara created. His six children and 12 grandchildren were his pride and joy. Besides his love of family and practicing medicine, he enjoyed days on the sailboat with his sons, traveling with family, playing poker and blackjack. He loved history, debating, and investing. His childhood years with the Carmelite Sisters taught him the value of kindness and philanthropy, and he donated time and medical care to the Sisters and residents of the Home for decades. He was a significant donor to the YMCA of Hammond, IN, enabling them to provide a pool and lockers for the local branch members. He was also an active member of the Lions Club, serving up pancakes and steaks at their events for many years.

Claude's life was marked by his dedication to medicine, his family, and his community. His legacy of compassion and service will be cherished by all who knew him.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2024, from 12:00 - 4:00 p.m. at KISH FUNERAL HOME, 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster IN.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Damar Services Foundation: Carmelite Home of East Chicago (https://www.damar.org/damarnorth/).

Claude was very supportive of me, and influential in developing my medical practice. His greatest gift, and I have to credit Barbara (maybe even more than him) was his spectacular offspring and the job he did raising them. You are all intelligent, perceptive, kind, well-mannered, motivated and fun to be around. Job well done, life well lived. RIP my friend!

I have been blessed with the good fortune of having Claude as a good friend through most of my life. I have benefitted from his caring friendship, generosity, sound advice, and inspiration. For a man that was born into this world with the odds stacked against him, he utilized his God given gifts and talents to not only better himself, but improve the lives of his fellow man, his community, and inspire a loving family that that continues to do the same. I will miss Claude and his wife Barbara, but the world is a better place because of the lives they led. My condolences to the family.

Dr. Foreit would sometimes (in the old days) come to surgery and assist the surgeons during surgery. I remember when he would come and assist R.C., Dr. Foreit always had a good story to tell while we closed the patient. He was a kind man and everyone loved his bedside manner. My condolences to the family.
