MUNSTER - If you are from Munster, IN there's a good chance you knew Daniel Lowry. Given the tremendous number of lives he touched, at the very least, you know someone who knew Dan Lowry.

On October 18, 2024 Daniel Lowry, a devoted husband, beloved father, cherished grandfather and inspiring educator passed away at home after a battle with pancreatic cancer, leaving behind a legacy that will resonate in the hearts of all who knew him.

Born in Highland, IN to Joseph and Catherine (née Nolan) Lowry, Dan met the love of his life, Kathleen Mullaney at Bishop Noll High School and their bond grew into a beautiful partnership that lasted almost sixty years. They moved to Munster and built a home filled with laughter, love and unforgettable memories. He cherished every moment spent with his family, especially relishing the role of "Grandpa" to his six adoring grandchildren, who brought immense joy and purpose to his life.

Daniel was a man of many interests. Whether it was exploring the magic of Disney World with family, immersing himself in the thrilling intensity of "Breaking Bad" or the droll humor of "Seinfeld", simply lacing up his beloved Reebok sneakers for a day of yard work, or contemplating the lake and ducks at Centennial Park, he approached life with thoughtful wisdom and boundless curiosity. He had a fondness for humor, displaying his wit through the "dad jokes" that his family and students came to expect, especially those about cows-often delivered with a twinkle in his eye and an eagerness to make others smile.

Daniel worked tirelessly to support his family. He taught Economics and Labor Law at a host of colleges and universities; he taught Driver's Education to hundreds of local teens. He worked as a realtor and real estate appraiser and labored in the local steel mills. Remarkably, Daniel dedicated almost six decades to teaching eighth-grade Social Studies at Wilbur Wright Middle School, shaping and nurturing the minds of thousands of students fortunate enough to sit in his classroom. His passion for history and teaching was evident in everything he did. He was honored to be one of the first three teachers in the newly installed Wilbur Wright Middle School Hall of Fame.

A wise and loyal man, Daniel approached life with a gentle spirit and consistently demonstrated kindness and fairness in every interaction. When asked for his secret to a happy life, Dan would reply, "Marry your best friend."

Daniel's legacy will endure through his beloved Kathleen; his children, Nora (Ted) Fitzpatrick and Maureen (Donald) Lowry-Fritz; and his grandchildren, Margaret, Teddy (Emily), Tess, Nolan, Danny and Ike; as well as the countless lives he touched as a brother, uncle, educator and friend. He leaves behind a wealth of memories filled with laughter, love and lessons learned that will be cherished forever.

In honor of Daniel's life, his family invites friends to celebrate his memory on Wednesday, October 23, 2024 from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Kish Funeral Home 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN with a Vigil Service at 5:00 p.m. and again on Thursday, October 24, 2024 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. followed by a 12:00 p.m. Funeral Mass at St. Thomas More Catholic Church 8501 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN. Interment will follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens Crown Point, IN. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, The Special Olympics, or Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind.
