David Frets Obituary

David L. Frets

Feb 26, 2025

David L. Frets, 66, of Griffith, Indiana passed away on February 26, 2025 after years of battling ongoing health issues. Dave is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Renée Frets (Colby), cherished son and daughter-in-law William and Amy Frets, and precious Grandchildren Willow and Brooks. He leaves behind his siblings: Kathy (Jay) Govert, Randy (Tammy) Frets, and Sandy (Tom) Benedict, along with brother-in-law Dan (Sally) Colby, sister-in-law Janice (Jeff) Konopasek, sister-in-law Susan Colby, sister-in-law Cheryl Colby, brother-in-law Jim (Sharon) Colby, and multiple nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and even great-great nieces and nephews; all of whom he loved dearly.

Dave was preceded in death by his sisters Debbie Frets and Tracy Grimmer, Parents William and Dianna Frets (nee Rosek), Brother-in-laws Jeffery and Patrick Colby, and his Mother and Father in-laws Lois and Merle Colby.

Dave and Renee met in 1978 through mutual friends and family members. They married in 1986 at St. Mary's Church in Griffith, IN, where they still call home. They happily brought their son William Frets into the world in 1988. He quickly became the center of their world. They loved nothing more than raising their son and supporting him throughout his various High School sports.

Dave was hard-working and dedicated to his job of 31 years as a Machine Operator and Welder at Union Tank Car.

Despite his medical struggles, Dave found his joy in the simple things; fishing at the Kankakee River (Dave's Bayou) and "Up North" Wisconsin, mechanics, relaxing in his garage, and long conversation with those around him. Above all, he found joy in spending time with his son William (Bud) and teaching him everything he knew. He was a proud Dad, and later in life, a most playful and loving "Papa" to Willow and Brooks.

Renee, Will, Amy, Willow, Brooks and all who knew Dave will miss him dearly. We will forever hold onto the wonderful memories of him.
