Ferd Melevage Obituary

REV. MONSIGNOR FERD J. MELEVAGE VALPARAISO, IN
Rev. Monsignor Ferd J. Melevage, 97, passed away on March 31, 2015 at Life Care Center of Valparaiso. Born in Port Carbon, PA, on May 31, 1917 to the late Simon G. and Susan Melvage. In 1940 his father Simon, who was a builder, moved his family to Gary, IN. In 1932, after completing three years at St. Stephen's High School in Port Carbon, Msgr. Melevage began his priesthood education at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Overbrook, Philadelphia, PA where he completed two years of prep school, four years of college, and three years of graduate studies. Cardinal Dougherty of the Philadelphia Archdiocese endorsed his transfer to the Diocese of Fort Wayne IN, completing his graduate studies at St. Mary's Seminary in Norwood, OH. He was ordained a Catholic Priest by Archbishop Noll in Fort Wayne, IN on May 30, 1942 with eight other candidates. Msgr. Melevage spent sixteen years, 1943 to 1959, at Bishop Noll Institute as a teacher, choral director, and Assistant Principal for eight years. He attended DePaul University in Chicago, earning his Master's Degree in American History and Education Administration. Later in 1962 to 1974, he continued his Apostolate in Catholic Education as the Superintendent of the Diocese of Gary Schools of over 28,000 students at that time. Besides attending to the ordinary religious obligations of the parish, each presented its own special challenge. After retiring on May 31, 1992 at age 75, Msgr. served as Senior Priest at St. Paul Catholic Church in Valparaiso until the time of his death. Survived by sister-in-law, Judith Melevage of Beverly Shores, IN; nieces: Lynnette (Dale) Fredericks of Crown Point, IN, Laurette (James) Karagas of Hopewell Junction, NY, and Bernadette (Ewaldis) Pakalniskis of Valparaiso, IN; nephews: Raymond of Valparaiso, IN, and Alan of Santa Ana, CA; many grandnieces and grandnephews. Monsignor was such an inspiration to all of us because he did more than preach the Word -- He lived it!

To Judy Melevage, the Melevage family members, and friends of the Msgr...
When I was 19 and my darling mother was dying of cancer...Msgr. came over from our parish, Notre Dame, and talked to her, in her death bed, about the blessings of suffering, heaven and eternal life, as a beautiful next step from this life...I am sure Ferd is experiencing now, what he told us that day, back in 1972.
He was an honest, caring, devoted soul and at our time of need, he had the courage to spiritually counsel us, at our moment of truth.
I wish all of who knew him, comfort, now at your time of his departure into heaven....I am sure my mother was there to greet him :)
Blessings

I never had the pleasure to meet Monsignor Melevage, but his signature was always on my report card. I wondered who this monsignor was and what he looked like. My condolences to his family.

Father Melevage was the finest priest, the most humble man and the most inspirational individual that I have ever had the privilege of being scholastically taught while he served as a teacher/counselor at Bishop Noll High School. I had the good fortune of having renewed our relationship at the fiftieth anniversary of my graduation sixteen years ago and I consider our conversation one of the highlights of my life. I feel blessed to have known him.

My deepest sympathies to Monsignor Melevage's family. He taught my mother in high school and he personally recruited me to be one of the first enrolled at Bishop Noll Junior High in 1972. He was truly dedicated to Catholic education. I will remember him fondly. Be assured of my Masses and prayers.
