Florence Medley Obituary

FLORENCE DOLLY "FLO" MEDLEY (NEE ORR-GREER) DYER, IN
Florence Dolly "Flo" Medley (nee Orr-Greer), age 86, longtime resident of Dyer, IN, slipped gently into eternity with beloved family by her side on Monday, September 1, 2008 while at Community Hospital of Munster. Born December 28, 1921 on the Southside of Chicago, she was the daughter of the late Francis and Edith (nee Kelly) Orr. A young wartime bride, Flo raised three children with her devoted late husband, Louis Greer from 1940 until his passing in 1957. In 1958, lightening struck twice and she was blessed to share another life of love and joy with her union to Leonard Medley on October 4th at the Crown Point Courthouse. In later years, twins were added to the growing happy family. Beyond her full time career as a mother of five, she worked also as a lifeguard, in the Gargonson Machine Shop, at voting polls, and by creating handicraft. An artist in her own right who passed this gift to others, Flo loved to paint and to create miniature rooms perfect down to the tiniest detail. Fun-loving "Flo-Baby", as she was affectionately known, enjoyed dancing when young and later watching others cut a rug. Family was her life - this matriarch was found at every holiday gathering in the place of honor, surrounded by adoring children of all ages clamoring for a story and a piece of her famous fudge. Many looked forward to her bedtime ritual of tucking-in by phone. Flo's twinkling Irish eyes smiled constantly, her melodious laugh filled a room and her heart held a love that knew no bounds - the greatest legacy one could pass to their children. All privileged to know Flo will deeply miss her comforting presence and generous spirit. Flo leaves to cherish her memory, beloved jewel of 49 years, Leonard Medley; her five precious diamonds: Louis (Linda) Greer, Coleen (Terry) Darnell, Dee Dee (Jerry) Clark, Laura (Neil) Pintler and Lisa (Bill) Giglio; dear sisters: Ruth (Bill) Banister and Eunie (Robert) Mattison; fond sister- in-law, Sally Orr; loving grandmother of 12: Kelly Greer, JoAnna (Richard) Mills, Melissa Greer, Jason and Ryan Darnell, Michelle (Frank) Martinu, Heather (John) Dumbsky, Brian and Brandon Pintler, Michael, Craig and Josh Giglio; doting great grandmother of eight: Kayla, Brianna and Mitchell Mills, Chris and Dedra Brown, Katherine, Jacqueline and Sam Dumbsky; as well as countless affectionate nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Waiting to greet Flo in Heaven are her parents; her first husband, Louis Henry Greer; brother, Hugh Orr; and sisters: Isabell Wiersma and Juanita Robertson. The family invites relatives and friends to gather and reminisce on Thursday, September 4, 2008 from 3:00-9:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 8178 S. Cline Ave. (1/2 mile south of U.S. 30), Schererville, IN (219-365-9554). A ceremony of rejoicing and remembrance will take place in the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 5, 2008 led by Funeral Celebrant, Marjorie Kunch. At rest, Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Schererville, IN. "Nite nite Flo-Baby. Love you!"

I have so many good memories of my best friend's mom. As teenagers, we all hung out at her house because she was so nice to us and so much fun. Since I stayed there many times, she heard many talks and whispers and teased me about it later on as an adult. She was a big part of my life and I will never forget her. My deepest sympathy to Coleen, DeeDee and all of her family.
