George Peters Obituary

George (Petropoulous) Peters

CROWN POINT, IN - George (Petropoulous) Peters, age 88, of Crown Point, IN, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 14, 2024, with his family by his side. George is survived by his daughter, Joy (John) Moskovich; daughter-in-law, Carol Valdivia; and grandchildren: Richard (Nettie) Valdivia, Michelle (Dan) Turpin, Erin Valdivia, Karen (JR) Jorgenson, Robert (Alisha) Valdivia, Jon Moskovich, Joe (Valerie) Moskovich.

He was preceded in death by his beloved late wife, Carmen (Varela-Valdivia) Peters; parents, Constantinos and Angeline (Angolos) Petropoulos; sisters: Georgia Petropoulos, Dimitra (Nick) Koaitas; son, Richard Valdivia.

George found purpose and joy in life by serving others. A son, brother, husband, grandfather, and friend to many; he was known for his generosity, kind heart, and sincere love felt by those in his company.

Born in Drakobouni, Greece, and immigrating to Gary, IN, at the age of 22; he stayed with Uncle George and Aunt Angela Sarpos upon his arrival. A lifelong soccer fan, he played in several amateur-pro leagues, dabbled in boxing and was an avid card player. Also, a hard worker, he held various jobs until arriving at US Steel where he proudly gave 35 years of service; and met his loving wife, Carmen.

What time and energy he didn't give to the mill; George gave it all to Carmen and his family. Carmen was truly the center of his world, his love for her was profound and unconditional even beyond her passing. They spent the golden years of their life vacationing to Mexico and Greece to visit family, babysitting grandchildren and supporting their activities, and hosting holiday gatherings. You would always find "Papou" in the kitchen, turning out the evening's dishes with a smile. Cooking was George's way of expressing love, anyone fortunate enough to receive his lentil soup will understand. He found comfort in being a provider. While George will be sadly missed, he will continue to live on in the hearts and memories of many friends and family. A visitation will be held at Burns Funeral Home & Crematory, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point, IN, on Thursday, November 21, 2024, from 11 a.m. until the time of funeral service at 1 p.m., Deacon Greg Fabian officiating. www.burnsfuneral.com

I worked with George in the fab shop starting around 1986! We worked very well together and could anticipate each other´s moves to make every job we worked on go very smoothly! He used to bring food to the mill and share it with me and many other workers! He was a gentleman and friend! I just saw he passed away today 11/23/2024. I am sorry I didn´t see his obituary sooner so I could have come and paid my respects! He and Carmen were both great people!

My dad, Ray Ostrowski, knew Mr. Peters and spent many a Saturday at my dad´s office with "the guys" while they played cards. Mr. Peters was very nice. I even swam at their apartment once in Miller where he and Carmen lived and they made lunch. It is a good childhood memory. Man, that pic shows he still looked good. God bless.
