GEORGE SPERL Obituary
Indiana watercolor artist and WWII veteran, George Joseph Sperl, passed away in his home on Sunday, March 30, 2014 after a long illness at 95 years of age. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dolores. George leaves behind a loving family to keep his memories alive. He was a loving father to Brian Sperl, M.D. (Elaine Moen M.D.) of Carmel, IN and Dorian Patel (Shodhan Patel M.D.) of Schererville, IN. Proud grandfather of Jonathan, Ben, and James Sperl, Erik Patel and Christine (Richard) Hennessey; and great grandfather to Anna Hennessey. George, a longtime resident of Munster, was born in Portsmouth, VA. He spent many happy childhood years on his grandmother's farm in Peshtigo, WI before settling with his family in Northwest Indiana where he met his wife, Dolores. George was a member of St. Thomas More Church in Munster. He enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow war veterans and was a member of American Legion Post 16 in Hammond. George was also a member of Knights of Columbus, Whiting Council 1696, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degrees, and Abraham Lincoln Assembly #235 4th degree. A self-taught watercolor artist, George was happiest in his art studio, painting Indiana Dunes and farm scenes reminiscent of days gone by, airplanes, and steam trains that continue to be admired nationally and far beyond. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas More Church in Munster. Interment at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville to immediately follow mass. Dear Dorian and family, I just learned of your father's passing and I am so sorry. You were such a wonderful family to work for. During a visit to The Park Full of Art, I came across you mother and Dad and bought several wonderful paintings of his for my grandchildren. I was so suprised to learn about Uncle George. Had not had a response to his last Christmas Card and wondered if he was o.k.. I remember Dorian spending time at our home in Miller.

Dorian and Brian and family, Like my Brother, I was unaware of your Father passing away.I visited him in Munster when I was in Gary a few years ago.I gave him some photos I took of him and Aunt Dorrie, and he was very happy to have them. He will be missed by many, and he and you all will be in our prayers.

Just learned of his passing today...just now. Did not know about it before or would have made the trip up there for funeral. Spoke to him last year. Patti sent Christmas cards but never got a reply. Always like Uncle George. Have many stories about him that your kids and grandkids may like. Did anyone contact his cousins: Karen, Walter Naslund's daughter; Gail, Russell's daughter?

Very sad to hear of George's passing, but very honored to have known him. He was a very talented artist, who will be deeply missed. I'm sure he is happy to be reunited with his beautiful wife. They were two lovely people who we were fortunate enough to know~

My family and I are saddened by George's passing. We purchased many of his paintings at the Griffith's Art in the Park over the years. He not only a great artist but a real gentleman. May he rest in peace and may God be with you.
