Harry Szulborski

Harry Szulborski MERRILLVILLE, IN - Harry Szulborski, age 90 of Merrillville, IN passed away August 4, 2017. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Katherine. He is survived by his daughter, Katherine (Carl) Sims; grandchildren: Harry (Lindsay) Sims, Carl (Norma) Sims, Brian (Shannon) Sims, Rose Sims; great-grandchildren: Cole, Hayden, Collin, Sophia, and Morgan, Hanna, Adam, Ava, and Olivia. Harry was the youngest of eight siblings who were Polish immigrants. He attended Pershing HS where he was a two time All-State, two time all City Running back for the Pershing Doughboys football team. He attended Purdue University where he studied physical education and played football. While attending Purdue, Harry was a four year letterman, two time all conference Big Ten, Captain, MVP, and two time All American Honorable mention. He played in the first Senior Bowl Game in 1950. He taught physical education at Gary Emerson where he was the head football, wresting, baseball, track, and golf coach for 39 years. He is a member of the Indiana Football Hall of Fame and Purdue Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame. Harry was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Peter and Paul Parish for over 50 years and a present member of Holy Spirit Church. He was also a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Friends may visit with Harry's family, Monday, August 7, 2017 from 2:00-8:00 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point, IN.
