James Coady Obituary

James Michael Coady ("Jim")

Mar 25, 1938 - Mar 5, 2026

James Michael Coady ("Jim"), 87, of Chesterton, Ind., passed away on March 5, 2026, with his loving family by his side. He was born on March 25, 1938 in Gary, Ind., the son of James and Bridget (Carrabine) Coady. Jim lived a life of humble service toward his family, friends, community, and country. He was especially proud of his Irish heritage and Catholic faith. Jim was a 1956 graduate of St. Lawrence Seminary High School in Calvary, Wisc., and served honorably in the Indiana National Guard. He worked for 30 years at U.S. Steel's Gary Works, where he served as supervisor of the 84-inch hot strip mill. In retirement, Jim worked part-time at Geisen Funeral Home where his warm and empathetic personality comforted many families.

Jim was a parishioner of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church and an active member of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. He was active in the Kiwanis Club and volunteered weekly at the soup kitchen at Sts. Monica and Luke Catholic Church in Gary. Jim enjoyed multiple hobbies, including his weekly handball games, golfing, landscaping, and watching the Chicago White Sox and Notre Dame football.

Jim's greatest love was his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Donna (Farber) Coady and he will be sadly missed by their three children, James (Mary) Coady of Sussex, Wisc., Kimberly (Bruce) Beerbower of Manhattan Beach, Calif., and Jeffrey (Anna) Coady of Chicago, Ill. He was the proud and loving grandfather of eight grandchildren, Sean, Colleen and Molly Coady, Kyle, Caroline and Connor Beerbower, and Sofia and Grant Coady. He is also survived by his brother, Terrence (Alexis) Coady of Valparaiso, Ind., sister, Patricia (Thomas) Owens of Hebron, Ind., sister-in-law, Darlene (Douglas) Johnson of Grand Rapids, Mich., and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Margaret Coady and Eileen (John) Jager.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, March 8, 2026 from 3 to 6 p.m. at Geisen Funeral, Cremation & Reception Centre, 606 E 113th Ave., Crown Point, IN 46307. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 9, 2026 at 10 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 509 W. Division Road, Valparaiso, IN 46385, with Rev. Michael Kopil officiating. Burial will follow at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville, Ind. For additional information, please visit geisenfuneralhome.com.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jim's honor to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton or to the Alzheimer's Association (Alz.org).

Jim will be remembered for his kindness, humility, and unwavering devotion to his family and faith.

God's comfort and peace to the family and friends mourning Mr. Coady's passing. His wife, Donna Coady, was my 7th grade teacher at Blessed Sacrament School in Gary. I believe that he came to the school during the school year. She always spoke lovingly about her family, especially her children.

I knew Jim (from USS) to be a friendly, good-natured man with a terribly demanding job. A hard worker who gave it his all.
