JAMES EARL NOLAN "JIM" MERRILLVILLE, IN
James Nolan, age 89, passed away peacefully at approximately 10:00 a.m. on April 5, 2015 at Crown Point Christian Village. He is survived by his loving wife, Betty Lou (Cook) (Mayes) Nolan; sons: James (Janet) Nolan of Gilbert, AZ; Steven (Fran) Nolan of Sun Lakes, AZ and David (Shari) Nolan of Brighton, CO; stepchildren: Deborah (Mayes) Carney of Chicago, IL and Lester (Jay) Mayes of Scottsdale, AZ. He is also survived by his five grandchildren: James, Christopher, Jason, Eric and Ashley Nolan; two great grandchildren: Adriana and Delaney Nolan and several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents: Winifred and Stephen Nolan; brothers: Frank, Daniel, John, and Robert; sister, Mary Moran; and his first wife, Georgia Ann (Smoot) Nolan. Jim was born in Gary, IN and attended Gary Emerson High School before proudly serving in the United States Navy aboard the USS Elizabeth C. Stanton (AP-69) in World War II. He returned to become a lifelong resident of Northwest Indiana. Jim retired from U.S. Steel Corporation, worked at Purdue University-Calumet and occasionally in real estate. He was active in the Merrillville Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary, where he enjoyed organizing holiday food drives for those in need. He was a member of the American Legion-Merrillville Post and Saint Andrew Catholic Church. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 10, 2015, 6:00 p.m. at Rendina Funeral Home (5100 Cleveland St, Gary, IN). Inurnment Calumet Park Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family on Friday, April 10, 2015 at the funeral home from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. For information please call 219-980-1141. Jim was a good man. He made my family and I feel instantly welcome in the neighborhood, and was always willing to lend a hand. Always good for a conversation or for a gardening tip or two, Jim was a good friend and will be missed. The neighborhood won't be the same without him.
