Janis Flutka
Apr 12, 1953 - May 1, 2025
Janis Helen Flutka (nee DeLauro) Crown Point, Ind.
If you're reading this, I passed away on Thursday May 1st, 2025, at 72 years old. I lived long enough to enjoy life's journey with my high school sweetheart, Rick Flutka. We were married for 49 years. Together, we raised our children, Michael (Jeffrey Baker), Beverly Hills Village, Michigan, and Melissa (Eric) Valsi, Crown Point.
I adored my children and grandchildren, Anthony and Andrew Valsi, and enjoyed every minute of being "Nonna". I loved my daily walks with my dog, Rascal. I was born April 12, 1953, in Gary, Ind. I'm survived by my brothers, Stephen (Kimberly) Crown Point, Elliott (Alice) Alabama, and Scott (Patti) Griffith, as well as my sister, Deborah (Steven) Volz, Missouri. "Adopted" daughters, Michelle and Krystal.
My parents, Elliott DeLauro and Helen (Collins) DeLauro, have preceded me in death.
A lifelong resident of the region, I graduated from Highland High School, where I met and married my husband, Rick. His huge neck and red hair grabbed me from the first time I saw him. After unknowingly wearing his football jersey in a high school powder puff game, we started dating a few months later. Karma brought us together, and the rest, as they say, is history. After receiving my Bachelor of Science in Business Degree from Indiana University (go Hoosiers!), I went on to become a Certified Public Accountant.
I was elected and served as the Clerk-Treasurer for the City of Crown Point. After leaving the City, I joined the Lake County Convention and Visitors Bureau as the Chief Financial Officer. There, I received my CDME and was recognized by the Indiana CPA Society as "Outstanding CPA in Government" in 2006. In 2015, I retired from the Bureau leaving a lot of wonderful business associates and friends. Hopefully, I've touched a few lives along the way and made them better. I never really cared what other people thought and stayed true to myself.
I'm with my beloved dogs, Dustie, Maggie, Chile, Pepper, Cosmo, and those two crazy ghosts that followed me around and tied knots in my blinds for years. During my life I volunteered for several organizations, including the
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital,
ASPCA, March of Dimes,
American Cancer Society, and the
American Heart Association. So in lieu of flowers, please donate to one of the above charities or organizations.
For my family, have a martini waiting for me at "Olive Garden Christmas" because "Nonna needs a cocktail" and don't be surprised if I make my presence known, I'll be there in spirit. Love to all and see you on the other side. Janis AKA: Louise, Towanda, and The Flutkanator.
