John Berna Obituary

John G. Berna Crown Point/Whiting/Hammond John G. Berna, 72, of Crown Point, formerly of Whiting and Hammond, passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2004. He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Diane (nee Petrin); two children: Rosanne (Eric) Bailey of Ann Arbor, MI and Michael (Helenmary) Berna of New Lenox, IL; four grandchildren: Janet (Ethan) Smith, W. Alexander Whitsitt, Sean and Evan Berna; brother-in-law, James Utterbach of California; two sisters-in-law, Mary (Frank) Prebola of Mount Top, PA and Colette (Leonard) Ciolek of Dallas, PA; numerous nieces, nephews, aunt, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his sister., Evelyn Utterbach. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 18, 2004 at 9:30 A.M. at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting, A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00 a.m. at St. Adalbert Church, Whiting, with the Rev. John E. Kalicky, C.PP.S. officiating. Interment, St. John Cemetery, Hammond, IN. Visitation at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. John Berna was born on July 9, 1931 in Whiting, Indiana, to John A. and Ann (Kometz) Berna, and was a lifelong resident of the Calumet Region. A member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Whiting, whose members together with the St. John Rosary Society, will offer prayers at the funeral home Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.; member of St. Mary Church, Crown Point, a graduate of Whiting High School, class of 1949; an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict attaining the rank of Sergeant; a retiree of the Amoco Oil Whiting Refinery with a service of 27 years and a member of the Amoco Oil Annuitants Club. John enjoyed golf and fishing, especially with family and friends. He was a devoted Husband, Father, and "Papu", who will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. John Church Renovation Fund or School Endowment Fund, or to St. Anthony Hospice, Crown Point, would be appreciated. 219-659-4400
