Joseph Hamang, O.D.

Joseph Hamang, O.D., age 67 of Merrillville, IN passed away after complications from bypass heart surgery.
He was born in Gary, IN to Michael and Josephine Hamang. Joseph was a practicing optometrist for over 36 years at Visionworks and Lenscrafter. He was devoted to his career and a member of the Indiana Optometry Association for many years. Joseph graduated from Merrillville High School Class of 1977, Purdue University School of Science in 1981 and lastly IU School of Optometry in 1986. Joseph was a devoted father to his three children, a wonderful son to his parents and a sweet, kind sibling to his six brothers and sisters. Joseph was a devoted member of St. Joan of Arc/Queen of Holy Martyrs Church in Merrillville.
Joseph will be remembered for his loving devotion to his family throughout the years and his dedicated efforts acting as caregiver for his mother for almost a decade, till she passed in March of this year. Joseph was known for his sense of humor, lighthearted spirit and love of adventure. He was a loyal sports fan of Purdue University, the Bears and the Chicago Cubs. Joe enjoyed golfing, playing tennis and working out at the fitness center. He also loved to go to area casinos.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Michael and Josephine Hamang, his brother Dr. Peter Hamang and his nephew Peter Michael Hamang II.
Joseph is survived by his three grown children: Sarah (Jacob Fisk) Hamang of Washington D.C., Mariah Sawyer of Chicago Heights, IL, and Austin Hamang of Chicago Heights, IL, his granddaughter Lyoll, and his siblings: Michael (Tracey) Hamang Jr., Michele (Steven) Shalla, Julie (John) Hamann, Bridget (Kevin) Gates, and Michaelene Hamang. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, whom he adored.
Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, December 14, 2025 at Geisen Funeral, Cremation & Reception Centre, 606 E. 113th Ave., Crown Point, IN 46307 from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Monday, December 15, 2025 DIRECTLY at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church (North Campus), 801 W 73rd Ave, Merrillville, IN 46410.
Interment to follow at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville, IN.
Joseph was a kind-hearted, loving soul who would help anyone that he could, both neighbors and friends. He will be truly missed. The world was a much better place because of his kind soul.
