Judy Black Obituary

Judy Black's life was a beautifully planned theme party-spirited and filled with people she loved. Judy brought curiosity, warmth, and a sharp wit to every room she entered. Whether the setting was a bridge table, a beach chair, or a stadium seat, she was fully present, engaged, and enjoying the moment.

Known for her remarkable memory and quick mind, Judy delighted in games of all kinds, especially bridge played with friends. She was happiest at the beach with the sun on her face, a good book in her hand, and the sound of laughter nearby. She found great joy in decorating and in the careful search for the perfect shade of color to make a space feel just right. Judy was an avid Chicago Cubs and Indiana University fan, but nothing compared to the passion she showed when cheering on family members in their many sports and activities. Sitting in the stands, she could always be found squeezing an arm and cheering with joyful enthusiasm-because loving her people was never a quiet affair.

Even at 90, Judy kept busy with a number of activities, including bridge, garden and book clubs. She was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Judy's greatest joy came from the life she built with those she loved. She shared 70 years of marriage with her devoted husband, Ray. Her love extended generously to her family, especially her grandchildren, and to all of her dearest friends.

Judy is survived by her husband, Ray; her children, Lori (Keith) Hanway, Doug (Melissa) Black, Scott (Diana) Black, Amy (Hank) Schilling, and daughter in law Christen Black; her grandchildren, Kurt, Angela, Whitney, Kyle, Corinne, Abigail, Zachary, Michael, Jessica, and Jacob; and a growing number of great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Todd.

Judy's life was a celebration-well themed, lovingly attended, and impossible to forget. Those who were lucky enough to be part of it will carry her spirit with them always.

Judy has been my dearest friend for sixty years. Bridge is what brought us together. We continued playing the game throughout the years. There were many girl trips Judy and I took with close friends. In fact we were planning another trip with Ray to Florida in February. She would have Theme bridge get together lunches where the table was set depicting a theme and whoever guessed it received a little prize. There are many stories that could be shared to state what a fun, clever wonderful friend and person she was. She made the world a little better just by her being in it. I truly miss her. She was a dear special friend.

I didn't know Judy for a very long time. They came to Salem fairly recently. But I do recall how her and her husband had shared many years of marriage. And always a pleasant person as a member of Salem United Methodist Church
My condolences, Ed Atkinson

I met Judy when I started working at Innsbrook Country Club. She would come in with the girls and play bridge or join friends with her husband Ray and have lunch. Judy had a way about her. Kindness was part of who she was. I looked forward to seeing her cheery personality. Judy also liked to treat herself to a Brandy Alexander. Her and the girls would often partake while playing a game of bridge. So in honor of one of the good ones I offer a Brandy Alexander toast: May the brightest light you shined in your life reflect on all the people you touched and spread to those you didn´t. Much love to all who loved you.

I extend my deepest condolences-Judy was on of the the sweetest, kindest and happiest women I have ever met. She played bridge and ate where I worked for 15 years and has always been one of my favorites. She always had a smile and a kind word. She will truly be missed and I pray that Ray and her entire family find peace knowing she was probably dealt a great hand in heaven.Rest in heaven Judy .

I knew Judy from the Methodist Church. She was such a sweet lady. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. I told her last Sunday that someone was on my mind. She said, "You should
give her a call. There is probably a reason that she is on your mind. We never know what may happen in life." I will make that call for sure now. Bless you sweet Judy..

We had had brunch & played bridge with them on Sunday, 1/11. As always, we talked & joked as much as we played.
