Visiting the James Short Farm in Knox, IN with Kenneth Nichols

I am very proud of my Great Uncle, Kenneth Nichols. He was a role model in so many ways, first as a respected family member, second as a brave soldier in WW2 where he served with the 315th Bomb Wing on Guam as a Lt. Colonel in the US Air Force, and third as a Professor at Valparaiso University for 36 years where he taught Human Anatomy and Physiology. It was important to me to travel from Oregon to Indiana to for his funeral services to give him the respect he was due. I really appreciated him in my life.

As my undergraduate professor, Dr. Nichols was a dedicated educator, and as a colleague, Ken was my mentor. He was always a superb professional and a worthy model.

I met Ken a few years ago when he wanted to sell a rental house in Valparaiso. I quickly learned what a special person he was. We sold that home & then a couple of years later sold his own home. He was a gentle soul who cared so deeply for his wife, Pauline. His life was full of such interesting stories from his childhood, the military, and his years at Valparaiso University. While in his 90's he never slowed down and did not let age define his activities. It was an honor getting to know this wonderful man.
