Larry Raab Obituary

Larry (Lawrence) Raab

May 30, 1938 - Oct 18, 2025

Larry (Lawrence) Raab, age 87 of Schererville, IN and Nokomis, FL, passed away on October 18, 2025 in Nokomis, FL. He was a devoted husband, dad, and papa, self-made businessman, and beloved and respected friend to many.

He is survived by the love of his life, Josephine Raab; his three children, Diane Raab, Debbie (Mike) Urban, Andy (Lisa) Raab; grandchildren, Ryne, Michael (Sabrina) Urban, Courtney (Ryan), Brittany, Connor and Carly Raab and bonus grandchild, Marc (Traci) Urban; sister, Ginny (Don) Sorota; brothers-in-law, Tony (Sue) Vicari, and Tom (Marti) Vicari.

He was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Clara Raab; his brothers, Edward, Victor, Fred, Robert, and Clarence Raab; his sisters, Rosemary Stepien, Evelyn Reid, LaVerne Seberger, and Margaret Broholm; brothers-in-law, Carl Seberger, Kenneth Broholm and Leonard Sobkowicz; sisters-in-law, Alice Raab, Joanie Raab, Marie Sobkowicz, Pat Vicari, and Bonnie Vicari.

Born and raised with humble beginnings, Larry began his career delivering groceries for Strack and Van Til. Through dedication, grit, and his no-nonsense approach to life, he rose through the ranks to become one of the owners of Strack and Van Til and Ultra Foods. His success was not just measured in business, but in the countless lives he touched through mentorship, and an unwavering belief in hard work and integrity.

A lifelong advocate for his community, Larry founded the St. James Family Help Service, providing assistance and hope to families in need. He poured his heart into numerous fundraising efforts, including initiatives to support Calumet College, where he also served proudly on the Board of Directors. His leadership extended to the Highland Chamber of Commerce, where he worked to strengthen local businesses and foster community growth.

In his spare time, Larry could be found on the golf course - his true sanctuary. Known for his colorful golf attire and signature phrases like "reload," "double press," "play it down," and "R for respect," he was as passionate about the camaraderie of the game as he was the competition. He loved organizing golf trips and outings for friends, creating lifelong memories both on and off the greens.

Ever the entertainer, he also introduced many to his favorite card game, Three to Fifteen, which became a cherished tradition among his circle. Whether it was an annual tournament or a casual weekly game, laughter and friendly rivalry always followed.

Larry's legacy lives on in the countless people he helped, the community he strengthened, and the friendships he nurtured. He will be remembered not only for his success, but for his heart - a man who worked hard, gave generously, and lived fully.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the St. James Family Help Service (St. James Church, Highland, IN) or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
