Mary MacConnell Obituary

Mary Lou "Bartman" Mac Connell

Apr 1, 1931 - Apr 2, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Lou Mac Connell, who left this world at the age of 94 on April 2, 2025 in Racine, Wisconsin. Mary Lou was born on April 1, 1931, in Johnston City, Illinois to loving parents who instilled in her a strong sense of compassion and dedication to helping others.

Mary Lou was preceded in death by her beloved husbands, Gordon Bartman and Hughston Mac Connell, as well as her daughters Kathryn and Diane. She was also preceded by her parents, siblings, cousins, and many dear friends. Mary Lou is survived by her cherished children Kenneth, Fritz, Ruth, Beth, and Peggy, who will forever treasure her memory and the legacy she leaves behind.

Throughout her life, Mary Lou accomplished so much and touched the lives of many. She dedicated herself to raising 7 children with love and care, and her impact extended beyond her family. Mary Lou was a passionate educator, teaching American and English Literature at Elizabeth Seton High School, Chicago Public Schools, and CCD at St. Ann's Parish, where she inspired countless students with her knowledge and guidance.

Mary Lou's personal traits truly made her special. She devoted her time and attention to helping others, whether it was through her involvement in the homeowner's association, serving as the secretary of the TFN reunion committee, or her commitment to various charitable causes. She had a thirst for knowledge, often found immersed in the pages of National Geographic and Smithsonian magazines and enjoyed cultural pursuits such as attending arts and literature museums and performances. Her faith in humor was unshakable in all of life's trials and tribulations, a rock to many.

In her free time, Mary Lou indulged in her hobbies of playing bridge, thrifting, and traveling the world, always eager to learn and explore new places. Her spirit of adventure and love for discovery remained with her until her final days.

A service to honor and celebrate Mary Lou's remarkable life will be held on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at All Souls Parish (St. Ann Church), 3010 Ridge Road, Lansing, Illinois. The visitation will take place from 9 AM to 11 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial and committal ceremony at Assumption Cemetery in Glenwood, Illinois.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to WTTW Chicago, the Juvenile Diabetes Association, or M.A.D.D in Mary Lou's memory, reflecting her generous spirit and commitment to making a difference in the world.

Mary Lou Mac Connell will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her legacy of kindness, wisdom, and compassion will continue to inspire those whose lives she touched. May she rest in peace, forever cherished and remembered. www.schroederlauer.com.
