Dear Danny, Peggy and Zak,
I know to say I grieve with you and your family is empty compared to the grief you are experiencing and will go through for a long time as you mourn the loss of little Max. But, just as the butterflies awakened from their slumber when the sunlight came across their faces and they were released to fly off into the sky to bring hope, love, and joy to the world, may you and your family soon be able to rejoice in the beauty your little Max brought to our lives for such a short time.

The memories I have of that little one snuggling in my arms and that beautiful smile with the precious dimples will always be in my heart.

His life with us may have been short, but his spirit and the gifts of joy, love, faith, and hope he gave us will endure and give you and all of us who loved Max, the strength and courage to go on as each new day dawns.

Rest in peace, little one. We loved you so much for your giving spirit and your zest for life.

September 2, 2009

Dear Dan, Peggy, & Zac: May beautiful memories help to sustain you during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you each day. Your Michigan cousins, Carol Lapham (Midland) and Elaine LaMarre (Alpena)

Dear Peggy, Dan & Zach,

Losing a child is almost unimaginable and such a horrible tragedy to any family. This was a poem that helped another dear friend get through their darkest hours of grief when they lost their little girl to a similar tragedy.

Lullabies for Max
Daddy please don’t look so sad,
Mommy please don’t cry.
I am in the arms of Jesus
and He sings me lullabies.
Please do not try to question God,
don’t think He is unkind.
Don’t think He sent me to you and that
He changed His mind.
You see, I am special
and I’m needed up above.
I’m the special child you gave Him,
the product of your love.
I’ll always be there with you.
So watch the sky at night.
Find the brightest star that’s gleaming.
That’s my halo’s brilliant light.
So Daddy please don’t look so sad.
Mommy please don’t cry.
I am in the arms of Jesus.
And He sings me lullabies.

Peggy and Dan
You and your families are and will be in my prayers. I hope and know that you are and will be surrounded by people who love you. This is one of those times when the believing does not come easy. The believing of many makes it easier. Believe that God cries with you and that God too grieves because this terrible event has happened but when the bad stuff happens God finds a way to come through. So God keeps the promise and now God takes care of your little one. And God will find a way to come through for you too. I will try to be with you tomorrow.
Love ya!

Peggy and Dan,

Gooooal! Those are the last words I remember Max saying while playing hockey at your house this past year. He was such a cool and sweet boy, a boy's boy. You are two of the most loving and attentive parents I've ever met and my heart aches for you. I'm so sorry. I will pray for you and Zach by name every night so your pain will be alleviated and you three will grow closer to each other in your grief. Footprints in the Sand, our Lord is with you and so are mine and my whole family's prayers. May God bless you and keep you safe.

Dear Szumski Family,
It was with a heavy heart and very deep sadness that we learned the news of this horrible tragedy that has struck your loving and wonderful family. It is unimaginable the pain and suffering this will bear upon you. If the smallest of thoughts and prayers could ease any of your pain, then know thay they are 1000-fold from all those thinking of you and your family at this darkest of times. May it be of some comfort to know that little Maxwill never endure any earthly suffering for he is in the Kingdom of Heaven where love and peace abound.
In Endless Prayer,

Peggy, Dan, and Zach; Kathy and Bob Jr.:

When I would take my mother to mass at St. Maria Goretti, I would smile at seeing Max being carried up to the altar by his father for the kids' blessing at the conclusion of mass. Later, he would walk holding his father's hand. Now I picture him walking up to a golden altar in heaven holding an angel's hand and smiling a big smile.

I am glad I have that picture of him in my mind. May you find comfort and eventually peace with this incredible loss. God must have a higher purpose for Max. And he is still with you in your memories and in your heart.

Even though I do not know this family I would like to send them my heart felt condolences. I cannot even imagine the heart ache that you are going through. May God keep you in his graces and know that you have a special angel looking over you until you can be reunited again. May you find peace in the days and months to come.
