Phyllis Sommers

Sept. 2, 1935 - Nov. 11, 2021

KOUTS, IN - Phyllis Sommers, 86, of Kouts, Indiana, passed away November 11, 2021 in her home. She was born in Kouts on September 2, 1935, to the late Arthur and Evelyn (Good) Birky. She had two sisters: Gloria Gibson and Jane Slabaugh who survive. She graduated from Kouts High School and soon met a young man, Earl Sommers, from Louisville, Ohio. They were married 60 years until his death in 2015, and had four children: John Sommers of South Bend, IN, Cindy (Mike) Robertson of Kouts, Tammy Wenhold of Quakertown, PA, and Dawn Holmgren of Kouts, who passed away in 2016. She also had a son-in-law, Craig Wenhold, who passed in 2018. Phyllis had eight grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren whom she delighted in spending time with.

She was mostly a homemaker but enjoyed her part time job at the Phyllis Sommers Koffee Kup in Kouts. She was a lifetime member of Hopewell Mennonite Church where she sang in the lady's choir and enjoyed the women's fellowship luncheons. She was also a member of Gideon's Intl Valparaiso campus. A special thank you to her caregivers Beth and Shawna. She will always be remembered for her sweet spirit and grateful heart.

A graveside service was held November 16, 2021 at Hopewell Cemetery, Pastor Joel Short officiated. Donations can be made to Gideon's Intl or Hopewell Mennonite Church.

My prayers for the family.
I had the pleasure of serving with the Porter County Gideons where Phyllis was a faithful member of the Auxiliary. Also, I met her family growing up when they lived next door to my grandparents, Doyne and Dorothy Stewart.
