Raymond Dahlin Obituary
Dr. Dahlin's coaching and educational accomplishments are extensive which includes his Palomar College Speech Squad winning four (4) National Championships. He produced, wrote and directed many award winning musical comedies. One of his great many accomplishments was his annual production of the Nutcracker Ballet held every year at Palomar Junior College. Besides having an extensive background in Drama, Music, and Dance both as a performer and producer/director, Dr. Dahlin was named Outstanding Educator of the Nation several times, as well as receiving the National Merit Services Award at his last national speech tournament. He also received the Nation's top coaching honor in competitive speech when he received the Distinguished Service Award along with receiving a coaching award at the Governor's Cup in Sacramento, California for continued coaching and teaching excellence. He also won an insurmountable amount of additional awards including "Coach of the Decade" and "Outstanding Faculty Advisor". Dr. Dahlin was also active in San Diego and Southern California politics and at one time, served as a member of the Board of Directors on the California State Ballot Board. He also served as the President of the George Stevens Youth Foundation for underprivileged children, an organization founded by personal friend and San Diego City Council member George Stevens. In 1999 the San Diego City Council honored Ray by proclaiming a "Dr. Raymond Dahlin Day" in San Diego. He was also a member of the San Diego Business Owners Association in conjunction with owning and operating several apartment complexes in San Diego as well as being a member of the California State Sheriffs Association. Upon Dr. Dahlin's return home to Indiana every summer, he participated in and coached youth sports and activities and helped the Dahlin family by working and managing several of the family owned businesses. Dr. Dahlin is survived by his daughters Tanya Monique Dahlin of Poway, California, Dondi Simone Dahlin of San Diego, California, sister Doris Hojcus (Rudy) of Crown Point, Indiana; brother Carl L. Dahlin Jr. (Patricia) of East Chicago, Indiana; niece Candace L. Dahlin of Hammond, Indiana, nephews Brian C. (Denise), Carl L. (Mary) and Christopher J. Dahlin of East Chicago and Porter, Indiana and Randy Hojcus (Tammy) of Hebron, Indiana and ex-wife and best friend Donna Edens of Florida. "Celebration of Life" services were held at the Palomar Junior College Gymnasium on Sunday, August 29, 2004 (at 6:00 p.m. P.S.T.) where a posthumous award in Dahlin's honor, "The Ray Dahlin Most Inspirational Coach of the Year Award" was presented.
