Richard Moore Obituary

Richard L. Moore, Sr.

Dec 29, 1934 - Sep 2, 2025

Richard L. Moore, Sr., age 90 of Valparaiso, formerly of Merrillville, passed away peacefully at home on September 2, 2025.

Affectionately known as Dick or Boppie to his friends and family, he was a 1952 graduate of Lew Wallace High School. On July 31, 1954, he married Sherry Niehaus, who proceeded him in death on April 20, 2010. He worked extremely hard his entire life to provide for his wife and 8 kids, and passed his work ethic on to them. He spent his career in management at US Steel and also had a part time job as an auto mechanic at Sears. Upon retirement, his passion for children led him to him to driving a school bus for Union Township Schools where he was loved by students and parents alike.

Richard was first and foremost a Christian man who demonstrated the importance of living his Catholic faith and passing the faith on to his children. With eight of his own, his love of children was clear and continued all the way to the last day of his earthly pilgrimage. He loved cars from the time he was a young boy and was a talented auto mechanic. Richard was always fixing whatever needed to be repaired around the house as well. He was a remarkable father and man and will be missed by his family and friends.

Dick is survived by 2 brothers, William (Sue Ellen) and Tim (Barb) Moore, a sister, Jeanine (Ken Hansen), 5 sons and 3 daughters, including: Richard L Jr (Kathy) of Ligonier, IN, Dr. Randall (Lisa) of Minneapolis, MN, Dianne (Dr. Michael Fletcher) of Indianapolis, IN, Daniel (Grace) of Fishers, IN, Jill (Sherman Izsak) of Valparaiso , IN, Jeffrey (Lynne) of Huntsville, AL, Shari (John Frank) of Fishers, IN and Dr. Scott (Liz) of Carmel, IN. He also is survived by 20 grandchildren, and 27 great grandchildren. Dick was preceded in death by his wife, parents Prentice and Marguerite Moore, brother Jay Moore, and grandson Steven Moore.

Friends may visit with the family on Friday, September 5, 2025 at Geisen-Pruzin Funeral & Cremation Services, 6360 Broadway Ave., Merrillville, IN 46410 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
