Robert Jerome Solon

Robert Jerome "Bob" Solon passed away on October 27, 2025, at the age of 92, at the Pines Village Retirement Community in Valparaiso, Indiana. He was surrounded by his three children, Karen Lain, Thomas (Tom) Solon, and Amanda (Mandy) Solon.

Born on March 1, 1933, in Hammond, Indiana, Bob was the youngest of three siblings. He attended Hammond High School, where he met Carol Weil on a blind date at age 15. Their bond grew into a marriage that lasted nearly 70 years.

Bob began his college journey on a football scholarship at North Dakota University. After a knee injury ended his athletic career, he was drafted and served in both the Army and Marines during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge, he attended Indiana State University, where he discovered a passion for psychology. He earned both his undergraduate and master's degrees in the field.

Bob dedicated his career to serving students as a school psychologist in the Gary Public School system. He was especially proud of successfully advocating for retirement benefits that had been wrongfully denied to him and his colleagues.

In retirement, Bob and Carol traveled extensively, visiting places like Alaska, Ireland, and Mexico. They cherished time with their six grandchildren and were present for the arrival of three great-grandchildren. Bob enjoyed crossword puzzles, tennis, fishing, and especially golf - so much so that he worked part-time at Wicker Park and Lost Marsh golf courses after retiring.

He will be remembered for his quick wit, spontaneous songs, and unwavering commitment to justice.

Bob is survived by his children; grandchildren Ryan (Erika), Phillip (Lauren), Elijah (Lucy), Alice, Eden, Hannah, and Paige; and great-grandchildren Penelope, Mable, Juniper, Oliver, and Milo. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edna and Joseph Vincent "Bud" Solon; siblings Lovell and James; and his beloved wife, Carol Ann.

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, November 23, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Celebration Center at Pines Village Retirement Center, 3303 Pines Village Cir., Valparaiso, IN 46383. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m.
