TIMOTHY SWEENEY Obituary

Timothy James Sweeney Timothy James Sweeney age 71, peacefully passed away on May 11, 2018, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Sara; daughter, Katie (Aaron) Hackman; son, Brandon Sweeney; sister, Mary Rogge; twin brother, Tom (Jane) Sweeney; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Florence; and brothers: Michael and Daniel. He grew up in Bloomington, IL, and attended Illinois State University, earning both a Bachelors and Masters degree in Education, as well as a Masters degree in School Administration from Governors State University. He spent 34 years at Thornridge High School in Dolton, IL, as a teacher, speech coach, and Fine Arts chairperson, serving as an inspiration to so many students and fellow staff members. He directed many theatrical productions, designed and built many beautiful sets, and consistently saw his students achieve top honors in dramatic and speech competitions at the state and national levels. He sat on the IHSA Advisory Board, worked with the Illinois State Board of Education on standards, assessments, testing, and teacher certification, and sat on the council for the Illinois Alliance for Arts Education. He was a long-time member, one-time President, and Lion of the Year of the Munster Lions Club. He continued to serve as chaplain and song leader, as well as chairing the clubs 75th Anniversary celebration. For many years he coordinated the club's vision and hearing screening programs for preschool children. As an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, he served as a Deacon and an Elder, and chaired the Worship & Music committee. His artistic creativity enhanced many projects at the church - the Living Nativity, special occasion sanctuary decorations, themed dinners, and Samaritan Center theatrical productions. He loved singing in the choir. Music was a true joy in his life, whether he was singing, listening, or playing his violin. The support and love of his church family meant a great deal to him. His faith was strong and never wavered. He loved working in his garden, taking care of his goldfish pond, and beautifying the home that he shared with his family. He was always kind, patient, intellectually curious, mischievously silly, super handy, and creative. He was a great teacher and mentor, musician, dancer, actor, and the most loving friend, son, brother, husband and father anyone could ask for. He was admired by all and will be dearly missed. A Memorial Service celebrating Tim's life will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, June 9th at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 8955 Columbia Ave, Munster, IN, 46321, Rev. Quincy Worthington officiating. Visitation with the family will take place from 10:00 to 11:00. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Tim's memory to Westminster Presbyterian Church.

I'm thrilled that this notice appeared in my inbox. Remembering Tim Sweeny is something I do often. I was a student of his at Thornridge from 1975 to 1979. In addition to being one of my teachers and mentors, he directed me in many productions, to name just a few: Jesus in "Godspell", and state competition, contest play "The Shadow Box" (winner by unanimous ballot). I went on to have a successful career on Broadway and in film/TV, and I'm still going strong. His belief in me during those impressionable years made me, in part, who I am today. Remembering Tim is such a joy. I will always remember Mr. Sweeny.

It was 50 years ago this year that Tim directed me and the other members of the cast of The Firebugs to a State Championship in Theatre. My life was forever changed and enriched by Tim's soulful teaching and I will always be grateful.

I'm so very sorry to have missed this announcement in 2018. But today Mr. Sweeney popped into my head, as he does so often, in a memory and I started a google search. Tim was a mentor and he changed my life (in many ways saved it) way back in 1975-79. He helped turn me into the artist (actor & singer) I became professionally, for now, 40+ years. He taught me so much about theatre. And upon his recommendation and guidance, I went to Illinois State to continue my studies in theatre and music. He directed me in many plays at Thornridge and together we won multiple awards in state competitions. I admired him and loved him very much. My condolences to Sara the amazing Mrs. Sweeney (Director of Readers Theatre) and his children whom one day I hope to meet. Blessings, Eddie

I am so sad to learn of Tim's passing. He directed me in The Firebugs, which won the Best Contest Play in 1972. He ignited the flame of art in me and many others. My thoughts are with Sara and his kids.

I noticed a few days ago online that Tim had passed so I shared Tom's video and obituary to many Thornridge alumni who loved both Time and Sara's compassionate teaching. I graduated in 1973 from Thornridge and was on the Speech team and later became a Speech teacher. My love goes out to Sara, especially, who always believed in me and Tim would just stand by her side and smile. Prayers for all of you at this time.

Tim Sweeney (and Sara) had an awesome influence in my life. Tim was a talented theatrical visionary. We took second in the Illinois State Contest play competition. He was bested by his twin brother Tom (Homewood Flossmoor HS). My condolences to the Sweeney Family. Places everyone, Heaven has a new director.

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Tim Sweeney. The lessons that he taught in class, in theater, and in public speaking competition have served me well over my lifetime. A true mentor in every sense.

Remembered him well from being a student and then wife of a student. HS 67-71. Wife of Guy Trayling (died 5/8/2015) who taught with Tim from 75-80. Great theatrical artist. RIP Tim. Condolences to Sara and their family.
