I will always remeber your Einstein and Modern Literature Course at Temple University as a visiting professor.You combined science and literature in a way that the lay student could understand. We read Hardy and Pynchon among others and it was enthralling. When entropy finally winds me down with either a big bang or a soft whisper perhaps we'll meet again-My condolences to your family and friendsafter so many years.

I was in Mickey and Alan's wedding in Port St. Joe, Fl. Ever since, Alan has been one of my favorite people. Few people have acheived the position of respect and high esteem that he enjoyed for so many years. There is no doubt that his passing will be a great loss to all who knew him. He was my next-door neighbor in Piedmont, CA for many years. He was the kindest, sweetest man. I am shocked at his passing. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

Alan, all your friends in science centers of India will fondly remember your big smile and lion heart for ever. Our 35 years of friendship does not come to an end here, it will flourish on and on with growing collaboration between our two countries, the collaboration that you started in 1980 during your first trip to India. Rest in peace!

I am shocked and saddened to learn of Alan's passing and echo the heartfelt sentiments of others here. He was the most brilliant man I have ever worked with, yet I fondly remember conversations I had with him like how we both loved watching This Old House. My deepest sympathy to Mickey, his sister and family.

I will always remember what Alan said to me upon my departure from the NY Hall of Science when he stated that "Laura will always be welcomed here". He made me feel significant and special. Alan will always be remembered as an astute individual who made a significant contribution to the museum culture and those who collaborated with him.

Such a sad, sad loss. Alan was one of a kind. A creative mind, a passionate educator, a 'romantic scientist', a role model for very many of us, a North Star... A true Renaissance man.

This is indeed a distressing day for the informal science education community. Dr. Friedman was an inspiration to so many of us at the NY Hall of Science. Without Alan's support and encouragement, I am certain my personal and professional growth would have gone in a direction far less fulfilling. To everyone close to Alan, especially his wife Mickey, his sister and his numerous friends and colleagues, please accept my deepest condolences. Alan's gentle demeanor and inspirational teaching will live in my memory and many others for years to come.

On behalf of my colleagues here at King's College London, I would like to express our deepest sorrow. Alan was a gentleman and a scholar; he was a passionate advocate for the informal science sector; and, he was a remarkably perceptive critical friend. As a man, Alan was warm and hugely supportive. He last visited us in November and shared his wisdom with our team. Our thoughts are with Alan's friends and family.
