ALAN F. SEGAL

SEGAL--Alan F., died on February 13, 2011 of complications of chronic leukemia. He is survived by his wife Meryl and children Ethan and wife Kelly, and Jordan. Born in Worcester, MA on August 2, 1945 to Rose and Bennett P. Segal, he is also survived by a brother Eric, Eric's children Sara and Eddy, and a sister Carol Foxman. Alan was a graduate of Amherst College (BA), Brandeis University (MA), and Yale University (Ph.D). Faculty member of Barnard College since 1980, he recently retired as the Ingeborg Rennert Professor of Jewish Studies. He was a teacher, mentor, and friend to generations of students and colleagues, as well as a distinguished scholar, author, and speaker. Funeral services were private. A recent academic conference and dinner in celebration of his retirement, in which he participated by teleconference from his hospital bed, commemorated his life's work.
