So sorry to read about Al´s passing. We worked together at Knoll years ago. Loved listening to him tell stories about the history of how a piece of furniture came to be, about the characters that comprised Knoll and how he built the collection at the Knoll Museum.
Mostly, I remember his kindness in working with a young A & D Manager and his indulging of my need to drive him around Seattle to see what I considered some of our architectural gems. Bertoia light fixtures to Gehry under construction - he never wavered in his willingness to support his somewhat naive colleague. What a treasure! Always in my heart, Al.

It was pure serendipity that I came across this and have always remembered Al most fondly. Two things in particular: (1) that he walked to work everyday from the Upper West Side to SoHo (was it Knoll where he worked?) in an era when walking wasn't as common is it is today; and (2) a 'recipe' for doctoring Campbell's tomato soup with curry, tabasco, worcestshire and pepper which I use to this day. I can't remember how we knew each other but I do remember John; and I think we shared several meals together before he moved to Florida. I trust he was happy all those years in Florida. It sounds as if he had a full life and memories will be more extensive than the two I cite! I'll always remember an especially great guy.
