Dr Rhoton's educational triumph continues to instruct and inspire all who venture into the innumerable recesses of the brain. His light remains undimmed. -- Steve Lownie and Alan Chalil, MDs

Dr. Rhoton and me circa 1988

Harry Emberson RN

September 23, 2016

I had the privilege of working as Dr. Rhoton's operating room nurse coordinator in the 1980's at UF/Shands Hospital. He was a gracious and honorable man who referred to me as the attending nurse! I learned a lot from him and his quiet yet direct manner. If I did something wrong, he would say very quietly, "Now, Harry, I've told you this 3 times." And that would be enough. I enjoyed my time working with him and his entire team and it remains one of the highlights of my life. I will cherish a letter I received from him when I left to further my career in Miami. He will be missed by many and there are untold numbers whose lives' he affected. As a team, he helped us pioneer new ways to set up for sub-occipital and trans-nasal pituitary resections. That was a challenge. I worked with him outside the operating room to develop instruments for the renowned "Rhoton Rack" and his round handled microsurgical instruments, developing the first 15cm versions. He had an enormous impact on my life and I'm saddened to hear of his passing.

March 11, 2016

I first met Dr. Rhoton at Shands when I consulted him for removal of a pituitary adenoma. My wife and I met him, and he spent the better part of 2 hours showing us around the hospital, explaining the procedure, and taking care of us. He was the epitomy of what I expected in a doctor. Caring, generous with his time, and professional in all aspects, he was a credit to his profession. The last time I saw him was in 2008 or 2009. But I recall his mild demeanor and his smile to this day. I'm sorry he's passed along to the "great beyond", but I know that wherever he is, it's better for his presence. Best wishes and bon chance, mon ami.

Dr. Rhoton brought me to Florida many years ago and I remained. He was an awesome teacher from whom I learned a great deal. I owe him much more than I can possibly state. He built an awesome program and educated neurosurgeons world wide re: neuroanatomy plus surgical techniques establishing international renown. He not only taught residents but also practicing neurosurgeons internationally. It was a tremendous opportunity for me for which I will be forever grateful. I am saddened to realize he will no longer be available to myself and other neurosurgeons. A great loss. Sincere condolences to Rhoton Family

The world has lost a gentle man and a brilliant medical hero! In early March of 1976, almost 40 years ago, this wonderfully skilled and patient angel of a surgeon Dr. Albert Rhoton, without a doubt saved my life and that of my family. I am forever in his debt for his highly skilled technique in the evolving field of micro neurosurgery. As I read below - he had just begun teaching his newly developed surgical techniques at U of FL only one year prior to his performing my surgery. He operated and removed a large blood clot sparing me as much physical trauma as was humanly possible. I am forever grateful to this incredible man for my life and the quality of life he protected so well. In all of the time that has passed, there is not a single day that I haven't thought of him and what he did for me.

Knowing that he began his studies in the field of social work, it sure makes sense to me that he would possess the most gentle and compassionate heart and soul. Allowing his hands to be expertly trained to help so many critically ill patients in his lifetime was such an incredible gift. My condolences to all who knew him, worked with him, and loved him. Rest In peace Dr. Rhoton!

Joyce and all,
Since "but for Al Rhoton and his skill" I would not be here, it has not been hard for me or my entire family to put him in HERO status, and he has remained so these past 34 years! The fact that I could call him "treasured friend", as well, was truly one of my life's greatest blessings! tom and I will see you on Saturday!
Warmest love, Hazel Donahoo

In 1975, Dr. Rhoton invited me to work in his educational center and laboratory. I never left. He has been with me throughout my career.
Dr. Rhoton taught the entire world. He will continue to teach all of us; including, the neurosurgeons, anatomists and students of tomorrow.

In 1999, I was so honored to have Dr.Rhoton as my surgeon. While saving my life and being the most brilliant man I ever met, Dr. Rhoton behaved as though there were nothing more important than caring for me.When I thanked him for saving my life and said I would remember him in my prayers forever, Dr. Rhoton said"Pray for my patients." My husband was ill for twenty-three years with Agent Orange caused sarcoma so we interacted with MANY medical professionals. There is noone who even came slightly close to the absolute embodiment of the compassionate physician we all hope for when we are ill that Dr.Rhoton was [other than Dr.James Alexander]. And yet when Dr,Rhoton came to see me on rounds, he sat and chatted with me about going to his granddaughter's graduation in N.C. and said how the thing he was proudest of was his children and grandchildren and how they all were choosing careers of service and how his wife had done such a wonderful job raising them. My husband was the kindest man in the world and next was Dr.Rhoton and I know how great your family's ache is . He changed so many, many people's lives for the better by choosing to serve with his enormous, magnificent talents and his greatness of spirit.

Dr. Rhoton operated on my wife in 1976. He forever changed the course of my entire family's life. Not only was he the most skilled of neurosurgeon's, but he embodied what it means to be a true healer. Mt wife and I came to Gainesville for Dr. Rhoton's retirement dinner. We had not seen him since the surgery in 1976. The hug that he gave my wife and tears in all our eyes reflected his humble greatness. It was an unforgettable moment. All if our thoughts and prayers go to the extended Rhoton family. I know my family will never forget him!

Dr. Rhoton operated on my wife in 1976. Over the last 40 years I have thought of him almost daily. Not only was he so skilled at neurosurgery, but he embodied the meaning of being a true healer. My wife and I came to Gainesville a few years ago to attend Dr. Rhoton's retirement dinner. We had not seen him since surgery in 1976. The hug that he gave my wife and the tears in all our eyes made a priceless moment for us. My life and my entire family's lives were forever changed by by the best and kindest neurosurgeon there has ever been. All our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Rhoton family. Gary Fromm M. I remember when I started working at UF/Shands in 1989 in the Dept. of Neurology for Dr. Melvin Greer; he and Dr. Rhoton would often consult together and he was the nicest, most soft spoken man and so very kind. He is definitely a man one will never forget. I have now worked with his daughter, Dr. Alice Rhoton for the past 15 years and they are one of the most wonderful families you could ever know. My heart goes out to all of them.

This has weighed heavy on my heart this morning. I have and will always be great full to Dr Albert Rhoton Jr. When I was Diagnosed with the disease Trigeminal Neuralgia in 1998 I thought my life was over. It is the worst pain known to mankind. He perform a Micro Valve Decompression brain surgery that gave me my life back, which allowed me to live pain free for 13 years. It was great feeling to know the best Neurosurgeon in the world was still trying to help find a cure. I will be forever great full for what you have done for all of us TN warriors. You will be missed by a lot of people you have touched. Prayers go out to the family through your loss.

Dr. Rhoton was humble, kind and welcoming to anyone for sure. His passion was helping others to achieve their dreams and advance medicine. Dr. Rhoton was quietly helping a young lady in Nicaragua complete medical school. His heart was so big for his Lord, his family and anyone who got to know him. The world may have lost a legend, but heaven gained an amazing angel.
