Alice Giffuni Obituary

GIFFUNI-Alice Quadre, 92. Died peacefully in New York City on April 1, 2010, with her children by her side. Widow of Andrew L. Giffuni, she was the proud mother of Vincent Q. Giffuni (Mary Ann) and Nini G. Tiernan (Bart); grandmother of Matthew Q. Giffuni, Sara G. Joseph (Rob), Olivia A. Tiernan and Julia T. Weidinger (Jack); and great-grandmother of Wade and Emily Joseph and Hugh Weidinger V. A graduate of James Madison High School in Brooklyn, she went on to study Romance Languages at Mount Holyoke College, finishing as a Phi Beta Kappa. She worked as an interpreter for the Argentine government until she married. Her greatest pleasures were sewing, knitting and reading. She enjoyed going to the opera, theatre, museums and the movies. Most of all, she loved to travel and did so most of her life, bringing home fabrics and plant cuttings wherever she could. She was called "D'Alice" by those closest to her, short for "Grand Alice". And that she was. A true lady, ahead of her time. Smart, interesting and interested as well. She looked great to the end, never showing her age. The pearl lady. May she rest in peace. A gathering of family and friends to celebrate the life of D'Alice will be held on Friday, April 16 from 5-7pm at 114 East 72nd Street. Donations in her honor to The Macula Foundation, Inc. at 210 East 64th Street, New York, NY 10065, would be deeply appreciated.
