ALLEN JOSLYN Obituary

JOSLYN--Allen. Allen Sheafe Joslyn, of Montclair, NJ, passed away peacefully Friday, November 24, 2023 in New York City at the age of 87, after a brief illness. He was born in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania to Col. Charles S. Joslyn, USMA, a WWII Army veteran, and Janet Blanchard Green. He was delivered by his maternal grandfather, George Dorsey Green, a prominent local doctor, immediately after the stroke of midnight in 1936. Allen graduated from Haverford College, B.A., with honors, Oxford University, and Harvard Law School, cum laude. During his time at Haverford College, he attended Edinburgh University in Scotland where he met his wife, Gunilla. Allen and Gunilla remained married until her death in 2003. Allen was a partner at Cahill Gordon & Reindel, where he spent his career, defending clients in complex antitrust, securities and mass tort litigation. He was a good friend and mentor to younger attorneys at the Firm, and remained active in its retired partners community. Upon retiring from Cahill Gordon, Allen maintained an active pro bono practice representing indigent tenants in the New York City landlord- tenant courts. He was honored for his work by the Legal Aid Society and the New York Law Journal, among others. Allen was a nationally recognized collector of antique ornamental hardware. He was a long- time member of the Antique Doorknob Collectors of America, and was President at the time of his death. His extensively researched articles for The Doorknob Collector put doorknobs and doorplates, frequently cast in the Gilded Age, back into their historical settings. Allen was known for his warmth, brilliance, ready wit, and generosity. His commitment to helping others was the foundation of his life. Over the years, a number of the people that he helped became part of his global extended family. Allen Joslyn is survived by his partner, Sandra Stern Nordquist, his daughter Ylva Joslyn Haddadin of Dover, NH, his son Carl Joslyn of Montclair, NJ, Ylva's husband Dr. Dafer Haddadin, Carl's wife Mabel Diaz- Joslyn, his grandchildren Areen Haddadin, Sereen Haddadin, Samuel Joslyn and Isabella Joslyn. He was predeceased by his sister, Lois Joslyn Smith. He will be buried at a private ceremony in Bellefonte, PA. Donations in his memory may be made to Heifer International.
