May Allen´s memory be a Blessing x

I only just learned about Allen's passing. Many years ago, when I was a young Ad Council employee, he was kind and encouraging to me. I've never forgotten his kindness or the wise advice he provided then. May his memory be a blessing.

I was fortunate to have been a Korey, Kay & Partners´ client, and even luckier when that business relationship blossomed into friendship. I was there when Allen & Lois introduced New Yorkers to "Money All Over the Place" with NYCE; one memorable shoot even made it into Stan Mack´s "Out-takes." Allen was indeed a mensch. May his memory be a blessing.

I met Allen once, on a NYC bus in 2000. And he clearly made an indelible impression on me. We struck up a conversation and he was witty, kind, and so present. I was astounded that this icon in advertising would chat with my 29 yr old just-starting-out-self and even give me some encouragement. I've thought of that conversation from time to time and how a few words from someone "important" can last a lifetime. Just a small conversation with him was that impactful on me. My condolences go out to his family.

I was the first writer Allen and Lois hired after starting Korey, Kay & Partners. I was still young, it was my third job in advertising, my second as a writer. I loved that job. I learned more in that job than in the rest of my 35 year career in. advertising. Lois was great, but rarely got involved directly with the staff. Allen ran then show. I never hear him utter a word in anger. He simply didn't think that way. He was the consummate problem solver and even conflict was merely a problem that needed solving. His brain was constantly moving, ideas popping from his mouth like popcorn from a hot pan. He not only gave me support, he treated me with respect and gave me autonomy over my work. He was brilliant, funny, a caring and truly wonderful human being. I loved him.

I met and worked with Allen at my very first Advertising job. Allen made NHS a great place to work. How sad this is and certainly for his family. My deepest sympathy to all of you.

Allen was my roommate and friend at Art Center. There was always something special about Allen, his imagination, his reasoning abilities, his work ethic and especially his love for Susan and later his love for his family. I have been in awe of Allen´s talents since we first met for lunch in 1963, before we both journeyed to California to start our careers in advertising. Allen and Susan welcomed Natalie and I into their lives and families both in California and in NJ with open arms. We will always be grateful for their friendship, love and lasting memories.

Back in the 1980s, when I was a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, I spent many hours with Allen and Lois for a profile of their start-up agency Korey Kay & Partners (even if there were no other partners then). He was wise and funny, in a perfect blend. He also was very kind; many years later, when I took a job running a nonprofit, he was helpful with advice. I also recall a lovely dinner -- not sure of the year -- for Allen, Susan, my wife and myself -- at Il Mulino, a favorite of his. Allen made his mark in so many ways and it was a privilege to know. May his memory be a blessing to future generations. I will think of him every time I see or hear "When you see something, say something," a line I didn't know was his but can easily see his hand in it.

Yes, Allen was handsome, clever and successful, but most importantly, he was a mensch in the true sense of the word. Kind and generous, he is loved by his immediate and extended families and will always be remembered with fondness.
