ARNOLD WINDMAN Obituary

WINDMAN--Arnold L. Arnold Windman, a nationally known consulting engineer who designed the systems for some of New York City's and the nation's most iconic buildings and a loving husband and father of eight, died in Hilton Head, SC, last weekend at the age of 83. Over a forty-plus-year career, Arnold was a partner, president, vice chairman and chief engineer at Syska & Hennessy, New York City, one of the country's largest consulting engineering firms. During his tenure, the firm designed the systems for some of the country's most important buildings projects: the United Nation's Building; numerous state and private university projects; the expansion of Rockefeller Center; the New York State Office Building and Mall in Albany; major terminals at JFK and LAX; and Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center. Arnold was lead-partner on The National Gallery in Washington, DC; The Jacob Javits Convention Center in NYC; major expansions of New York Hospital and Mount Sinai; The U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs and the American Hospital in Paris. He also oversaw the firm's expansion and growth from approximately 80 engineers in two offices to more than 600 in eight offices. Arnold was the national president of the American Council of Consulting Engineers (ACEC), the organization that represents 5,300 consulting engineering firm. He also led the formation of the American Tort Reform Association, Washington, DC, the only national organization dedicated exclusively to tort and liability reform through public education and the enactment of legislation. As an engineering student at the end of World War II, Arnold worked with a New York-based team of scientists that were part of the "Manhattan Project" which developed the atomic bomb. He graduated with honors in mechanical engineering from the City College of New York and was a member of the engineering honors society: Tau Beta Phi. After retiring, Pat and Arnold moved from Briarcliff Manor, NY, to Hilton Head, SC, where Arnold was an active member of the Sea Pines Board, the Sea Pines Forest Preserve and other planning groups. For several years, he was also active in the Democratic Party on Hilton Head. Arnold is survived by his wife, Pat, and seven children: Richard Windman; William Campbell, Marjorie Oxman, JoAnn Skolar, Sean Campbell, Colleen Campbell and Kevin Campbell; and grandchildren: Ian and Jay Oxman; Spencer Windman Campbell; Riley Campbell, Harper Campbell and Madison Campbell. A memorial service will be held Friday, June 25th at 4pm at the Island Funeral Home on Hilton Head Island. A second memorial service will be held in New York City later this summer.

Daddy, I will always miss you. I cherish the special times we had together. The "daddy days" when you took me to your office on Saturdays and we had breakfast at the Dryden East. Our trip to Expo '67 where we heard Maurice Chevalier sing "Thank Heaven for Little Girls". Our road trip to Hilton Head where we made it in one day and sang songs the entire way. All my love, Marjorie

My condolences and sympathies to the Windman family. It was my pleasure to work with Arnie on the Sea Pines Nature Preserve board. He was a gentleman, a raconteur, and a far-thinking intellect. His presence will be missed.

Dear Pat and family,
So sorry that you have lost Arnold. I had hoped to see him in the hospital but was out of town at the wrong time. He was a wonderful man and friend.

Love to all

Pat:

Jerry and I send our most sincere condolences. Arnie will be sorely missed by all of his many friends. We were privileged to have known him during our stay on Hilton Head Island. He was an incredible person and a leader of the Democratic Party.
