ARTHUR CARTER

ARTHUR CARTER Obituary

CARTER--Arthur L. The NYU Community deeply mourns the loss of our devoted friend and generous benefactor Arthur L. Carter. A true Renaissance man, Arthur had a successful career as an investment banker who owned and operated more than 100 industrial companies through his private equity holding company, Utilities & Industries Corporation; he was also an accomplished sculptor and painter who had solo exhibitions at numerous galleries, including the Grey Art Museum and 80WSE Galleries at NYU. Arthur was especially noteworthy for his passionate commitment to journalism. He launched his first newspaper, Connecticut's Litchfield County Times, in 1981; six years later, he founded the New York Observer, a weekly publication noted for its in-depth coverage of New York City politics, media, and the arts. In 2005, Arthur made a transformative gift to the NYU Faculty of Arts and Science (FAS) Journalism Support Fund. In recognition of his philanthropy, in 2008, the FAS Department of Journalism was renamed the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute. Arthur served as a member of the NYU Board of Trustees, which named him a Life Trustee in 2012, and was a member of the FAS Board of Overseers, where he also held adjunct professorships in philosophy and journalism. Our thoughts go out to his wife Linda Carter (STEINHARDT '74), a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine and a member of the NYU Steinhardt Dean's Council; his son, Jon Carter; his daughters Whendy Carter, Ellen Carter, Ginna Carter, and Mary Dixie Carter; his stepdaughter, Ali Marsh; his sister, Ellen Carter Wiesenthal (STEINHARDT '60); and all of his loved ones and friends. Evan R. Chesler, Chair, NYU Board of Trustees Linda G. Mills, President, NYU
