ARTHUR FLEISCHER Obituary

FLEISCHER--Arthur, Jr., Born January 27, 1933, in Hartford, CT, second of three sons of Clare (Katzenstein) and Arthur Fleischer, died March 21, 2025. Arthur grew up in Salt Lake City and Hartford. He graduated Weaver High School and Yale, class of 1953. Upon graduation, he spent two years, finally as an Army clerk typist at the Pentagon. Graduated Yale Law School, Class of 1958, member of the Law Journal and Order of the Coif. He married Susan Levin. He joined Strasser, Spiegelberg later known as Fried Frank in New York, where he spent his entire legal career culminating in his being Chair of the Firm, except for serving as executive assistant to William Cary, chairman of the SEC during the Kennedy administration. Arthur practiced securities law, becoming one of the triumvirate of pioneers in Mergers and Acquisitions. He co- founded the securities division of Practising Law Institute. He spoke and taught frequently on the subject including classes at Columbia and NYU. He published articles and books on the topic including Board Games: The Changing Shape of Corporate Power and nine editions of Takeover Defense: Mergers and Acquisitions. Arthur loved the practice of law. His leisure activities included years of studying the entire St. John's Great Books canon. He was an avid restaurant- goer classical and opera music lover, theatre goer, tennis player at Century Country Club, and art collector of prints and photographs, hundreds of which he donated to New York and Yale museums. He loved visiting museums and galleries, here and abroad. He served on the boards of the American Stock Exchange, the ICI, the Kitchen, and the Whitney Museum. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Susan, and his daughters, Elizabeth and Katie, and loved doting on his grandsons, Louis and Oliver Dietz, all of whom survive him. He is survived by his brother, Everly, sisters-in- law, Harriet and Jane Shapira, as well as nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his older brother Allan. He lives in our memories with his integrity, kindness, generosity, sense of humor, and intellect. Contributions to your favorite museum. Memorial service to be announced.
