AUDREY RUBIN

AUDREY RUBIN Obituary

RUBIN--Audrey Arndt, died August 6, 2025 as she lived - with dignity and grace. She was pre-deceased by her husband of 74 years, Samuel H. Rubin, M.D. and son, James E. Rubin, M.D. She is survived by her son, David A. Rubin, M.D. and his wife, Lorna Sacks Rubin; her daughter-in-law, Barbara Rubin Greenberg; grandchildren Elizabeth Clements, Geoffrey Rubin, M.D., Beth Rubin, Ben Rubin and Nate Rubin as well as 10 great-grandchildren. Audrey was born in Saint Louis, Missouri to Adele and Albert Arndt. She graduated phi beta kappa (4.0 grade point average) from Washington University. After graduation during World War II, she worked as a social worker, but like many extraordinarily competent women in her generation, she eschewed her own career to raise her children, assist in her husband's medical career (who ultimately became the dean and provost of New York Medical College), and basically run the small town at the Jersey shore where the family lived. When her children were more or less self sufficient teenagers, she returned to school and obtained a Masters of library science from Columbia University in New York City (also with a 4.0 grade point average). She became a professional woman and had an extremely satisfying career as the head of reference and assistant director of the Fairleigh Dickinson University Library system. She was a woman of incomparable grace, intelligence and wit. "The weight of this sad time we must obey; Speak what we feel, not what we ought to say. The oldest hath borne most: we that are young Shall never see so much, nor live so long." William Shakespeare, King Lear, Act V, scene 3.
