I did not learn about Austin’s passing until now. Austin will always be my favorite professor from my time at Columbia. He was a wonderful mentor. His lessons about how to create tension, conflict, and drama will stay with me. I still hear his voice when he tells the story of two old men saying goodbye to each other, both too full of emotion except to say “well,” and each other’s names. Well, Austin...

I think about Austin all the time. The advice he gave me, the knowledge about playwriting he gave me, the kindness and support he gave me. I remember his generosity of spirit. I have his picture up and I miss him a lot. My condolences and love still to his family and other friends.

I miss Austin so much. His inspiration, compassion, talent, wisdom, kindness and his amazing ability to make time for friends and students. When i first met him, I took advantage of his office hours. He couldn't get rid of me! I loved sitting and chatting with him. Loved his wisdom and insights...his amazing sense of humor. Time just makes me realize more and more of how special he was. I'll never forget him.
