BARBARA DIXON

DIXON--Barbara Saslaw, age 76, died suddenly on September 15, 2023. She is survived by her devoted husband of 50 years, Chris, her sister Liz Saslaw, her nieces, Rachel Rogers, Jessica Sananes, Bridgette Bartlett, her nephew Tyler Adam and six grandnieces and grandnephews. A 1969 graduate of Vassar College, Barbara was one of the first women in the managed futures business and a leading woman on wall street when the glass ceiling had yet to be lifted. She began her career at Hayden Stone as an assistant to Richard Donchian, "the father of trend following" and managed his trading system, a precursor to modern computer trading. She founded Spackenkill Trading, an independent commodity trading advisor and continued her career at Shearson and subsequent companies until her retirement as an executive vice president of Shearson Lehman Brothers in 1993. She served on the board of the Future Industries Institute. Following retirement, she devoted herself to non-profits celebrating the protection of open space, landscapes, and gardens. She was director emeritus of New Yorkers for Parks, chair of the Cultural Landscape Foundation and chair of the Yellow Farmhouse Education Center, an education center dedicated to teaching about where food comes from and how food impacts our daily lives. She was also a director of WellMet Philanthropy. She was a lifelong resident of New York and Stonington and a founder of Stone Acres Farm. She will be remembered for her straightforward, perceptive advice, wonderful sense of humor, light touch and love for her friends and community.
