BARBARA JACKSON Obituary

JACKSON--Barbara Bruce. Barbara Bruce Jackson (1939 - 2025) died at the Westchester Medical Center on January 22 after a fall at her home in Mt. Kisco, NY. A dedicated and inspiring English teacher who helped generations of youngsters get into college from Blind Brook High School in Rye Brook, NY, she taught her fortunate students to love literature and to think for themselves. After retirement she became a philanthropist and champion of the mar- ginalized and underserved, becoming board chair of Neighbors Link, a thriving non-profit organization that supports the healthy integration of immigrants. She believed deeply that all people deserve to live with dignity and respect. A magna cum laude graduate of the University of Memphis, she also was valedictorian of her high school class and earned an M.A. in English from the University of Illinois. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Kenneth T. Jackson, her son Kevan Parish Jackson, her daughter-in-law Karla, and her beloved grandchildren, Dylan Shannon Jackson and Luke Kenneth Karl Jackson. A gracious hostess who endured the death of her younger son, Kenneth Gordon Jackson, she was widely respected for her generosity, humanity, work ethic, thoughtfulness, and acceptance of difference. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. Visitation will be 2-4pm and 7-9pm on Thursday, January 30 at Beecher Flooks Funeral Home at 418 Bedford Road in Pleasantville, NY 10570. Funeral is at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 85 Main Street, Mt Kisco at noon on Friday, January 31. Funeral details on Beecher website. So many memories of Mrs Jackson from English class to cheerleading coach. She was a great inspiration. I remember her wanting to be the teacher who went into space and thankful it wasn´t her after watching that tragic flight. Condolences to the entire family.

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Mrs. Jackson. I was incredibly fortunate to have her as an English teacher at Blind Brook. She helped inspire in me a love of literature and writing. She was also an exceptionally compassionate and supportive individual. I was so excited to have connected with her again through Neighbor´s Link a few years ago. What a special person. Barbara Jackson was the best teacher my daughter had and a mentor to every student. Her passion for English
Languages and teaching was beyond anything I´ve seen. My deepest sympathy to Ken and her entire family.

Both Barbara and Ken were instrumental in my choice to teach history after I retired. Ken´s graduate seminar introduced to me the rigors of scholarship, while Barbara´s sharing personal classroom experiences and strategies, helped me to see how rewarding teaching can be. My deepest condolences to Ken and the rest of the Jackson family.

My love and compassion goes out to all of Mrs Jackson's family and friends. She was my teacher at Blind Brook and had a huge influence on me. I remember one project with her in which she made us write in the style of Hemingway. She was no nonsense. She was funny and sharp. She loved the literature she taught us, at least that was my impression. I don't think I'd be a journalist today if Mrs Jackson and the English Dept at BBHS had not been there to teach me in the early years. I am eternally grateful that I was so lucky to know her and be taught by her.

I´m heartbroken by the loss of Barbara. I was so young when I entered Blind Brook HS as a new teacher and Barbara immediately took me under her wing. She helped me navigate my professional career and was like a surrogate mother to me for years.

She was brilliant, inspirational, and compassionate. Barbara cared deeply about All of her students.

Her love for Ken, Kevan & Karla, Gordon, Dylan,Luke, and their extended family and friends was endless. I loved my visits to Chappaqua and the last minute jaunts into NYC for the many "Jackson" tributes and events.

Her work after teaching was equally valued. Although we did not see each other often I will be forever grateful for all she had done to make our lives better.

Rest easy my friend!

She will be remembered fondly by so many. My condolences to her family.
