BARBARA KAFKA Obituary

KAFKA--Barbara Poses,

beloved wife, mother and grandmother died at home after a prolonged illness. Her extraordinary wit, intelligence and heart made huge impacts on all she met. She was one of the first great American food writers and restaurant consultants, known and loved by chefs and bon vivants the world over. A 1954 graduate of Radcliffe College, Mrs. Kafka was a long time columnist for "Gourmet" and "Vogue" magazines and "The New York Times." She was a colleague of James Beard and served as a trustee of The James Beard Foundation and The Culinary Institute of America. Her consulting work included such notable restaurants as Windows on the World, The Four Seasons, and Gotham Bar and Grill in New York City. Her cookbooks, including "The Microwave Gourmet," "Soup, A Way of Life," and "Roasting, A Simple Art" changed the way we cook at home. For her many accomplishments, Barbara Kafka received many awards including two Lifetime Achievement Awards from The James Beard Foundation. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Ernest Kafka, daughter, Nicole, son, Michael, daughter-in-law, Jill and grandchildren, Oliver and Lily. A memorial service will be held at Frank E. Campbell, 1076 Madison Avenue on Friday, June 8, 2018 at 11:30am.

Mrs. Barbara was an amazing boss. I worked with her for 32 years. She taught me how to cook with love and I learned so much from her. My deepest condolences to Ernest and all the Kafka family.

Barbara was beloved to me; she was a mentor in my earliest years, always available if I called, always a straight shooter about everything and one thing that showed through in every conversation we ever had was her abiding love for her family (this is aside from her incredible intelligence and attitudes about food). She'll always be in my thoughts, as she has been over th years. Susan Herrmann Loomis
