BARBARA LIKE Obituary

Barbara Like, 65, of Weaverville, North Carolina. Barbara Like passed away on September 1, 2011 from cancer. Daughter of Benjamin and Esther Like, Barbara grew up in Teaneck, NJ. She attended Wellesley College for two years followed by studies in Israel, and then earned from Columbia School of General Studies, in New York City, her Bachelor's in Art degree in 1969, with Phi Beta Kappa honors, a Master's degree in Arts & Sciences in 1971 and her Masters degree in Music and Piano, in 1975, from the University of Missouri at Columbia. She subsequently lived in Santa Monica, CA; Pensacola, FL; Weaverville, NC; and Israel where she had made many friends. Barbara was a multi-talented and worldly "Renaissance woman." She was an accomplished piano soloist, chamber musician, classical music radio commentator and writer, with additional interests in the arts, including photography, and literature. Barbara also had an entrepreneurial side to her life. She successfully exhibited and sold her photography work, and also developed an interest in the management and renovation of real estate. In keeping with her independent and upbeat spirit, Barbara continued to retain a remarkable cheerfulness, lucidity and competence in bidding farewell to her cherished ones while in hospice care. She remained concerned to the very end about arranging for the needs of others. She was a class act. Barbara is survived by her husband Ed Hanlon, her siblings (Irving Like, Esq., Lillian Barbash, Arthur Like, M.D. their children (Robert Like, M.D. Sharon Like, Esq., Steven Like; Cathy Barbash, Susan Barbash, Shepard Barbash; Benjamin Like, Betsy Like, Gail Like, David Like, Sarah Rhatigan, Esq.); Barbara's former husband Haim Misholy, M.D. and by close friends, Celeste Pfau and Tom Pfau. Barbara approved this Hopi Indian prayer, I read to her at the hospice:

"Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on the ripened grain.
I am the gentle Autumn's rain.
When you awaken in the morning hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there,
I did not die"

I remember our happy days together growing up on Fire Island and the wonderful time we spent together in Israel after my bar mitzvah. I admired your marvelous talents as an accomplished pianist and avid photographer. I learned a lot from your strength, fortitude, and resilience in coping with illness and other life challenges. You were a truly caring and compassionate person who positively touched the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing you. We all miss you very much. Your memory, spirit, and good works live on! Love, Robbie
