BETTY EVANS Obituary

EVANS--Betty Barton (November 22nd, 1923 - February 5th, 2013). Betty Evans, a long time Greenwich resident, passed away on February 5th, 2013 at her home. She was surrounded by her two children; Jackie Quillen and Bart Loomis, five grandsons; Parker, Whitney and Bart Quillen and Landon and Dodd Loomis, and her dear friend of 24 years, Michael Cantero. She died peacefully at the age of 89. Betty was born on November 22nd, 1923 in Rockhill, South Carolina. She later moved to Washington, DC where she worked for the Coordinator of Information (COI), America's first central intelligence organization, and remained there throughout the war. At COI she met Dr. William Farnsworth Loomis of Tuxedo Park, NY, whom she married following his deployment to China. Betty and "Farney" raised three children together in Greenwich, CT, always stressing the importance of education and travel. In 1977, Betty married financier, Thomas Mellon Evans of Pittsburgh, PA. Tom and Betty shared a passion for thoroughbred horse racing, and bred a number of stakes winners including the 1981 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, Pleasant Colony. Betty and Tom were also active philanthropists, giving generously to many charities including the Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club. Betty had an avid interest in collecting paintings, furniture and wine. She loved all things canine, and her beloved Mini was with her at her death. Her family and friends will miss her marvelous intelligence, extraordinary grace, and magnetic charisma. A service celebrating her life will be held at the Round Hill Community Church in Greenwich, CT at 11:00am on March 9th with a reception following at The Field Club of Greenwich. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons (arfhamptons.org).

Betty had great style. "Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say and not giving a damn". Betty was one of a kind and I will miss her dearly.

I am sure Mrs. Evans is resting in peace in the in the Kingdom of the Lord. Though I met her very briefly, it was enough to get to know what a wonderful person she was. My deepest condolence to the family, as well as to Miguel Cantero, her always loyal attendant.
