Bill Helms Obituary

HELMS--Bill. Loving husband of Carol, father of Cherie and Erica, father-in-law of Ken Perkins and Andrew Krause, stepson of Kate, died at home in Manhattan on May 2, age 81. A professional photographer, Bill began his career during WWII aboard the USS Yorktown, where he specialized in flight deck combat photography. For his work during WWII, he received a U.S. Navy Photographic Institute citation issued by Edward Steichen. A graduate of Art Center College of Design, he was considered a leader in food, interior design and travel photography. His editorial work was featured in "House & Garden", "House Beautiful, Metropolitan Home", "Better Homes & Gardens", the "New York Times Entertaining" magazines, "Los Angeles Magazine" and "Los Angeles Times" special sections. His book credits include Time Life's "Foods of the World" series and Metropolitan Home's "The New American Cuisine". In recent years, Bill was passionate about fine art digital photography. A memorial celebration will be announced at a later date. Donations in Bill's name may be made to Art Center College of Design, 1700 Lida Street, Pasadena, CA 91103, Attn: Amy Swain.
