Bronson Chanler Obituary

CHANLER--Bronson Winthrop, of Rhinebeck, NY died peacefully on April 8, 2009, after a long illness. He was 86. Born in New York City on Sept 6, 1922, graduate of St. Paul's School and Harvard College, class of 1945, served in WWII as an Artillery Liasson Officer in the First Free French Infantry Division in Italy, France, and Germany, attaining the rank of Captain. He worked in the investment counseling business in Boston and New York and retired to a family estate in the Hudson Valley where he enjoyed the life of a gentleman farmer. An experienced deepwater yachtsman, he also spent every summer cruising Down East. He became an accomplished actor, cast in more than 20 plays by the Rhinebeck Theater Society. He is survived by his wife of almost 57 years, Evelyn Rogers Chanler, by four children: David and wife Helen, Leslie and husband Douglas Brooks, John and Winthrop, and by four grandchildren: Andrew, Katherine, Evan, and Willie, and his sister Rosanna Harris. Funeral services will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, Barrytown, NY, at 3pm on Sunday, April 19.
