BRUCE LEE Obituary

LEE--Bruce. Bruce died peacefully on October 14, 2022 aged 91 in New York City. Beloved husband of Janetta M. Lee, loving father of Evalyn B. Lee and Bruce H. Lee, proud grandfather of the late Andrew H. Lee, Thomas F. Lee, Lucy G. Bacon and Duncan R. Bacon. Bruce graduated from Rollins College and Fordham University. Prior to his distinguished career as a book editor and author specializing in military history, he first started work as a copy boy at the Daily News, then worked in every department at Newsweek until it was sold to the Washington Post. Bruce was then hired by the Reader's Digest, where he was the White House Correspondent and covered the Hill and Defense. He became the researcher and editor for Cornelius Ryan and James Michener. He also founded and created the Reader's Digest Press where he was Editor in Chief. Owing to restructuring, he left the Reader's Digest to work on creating important non-fiction books first for McGraw Hill and then William Morrow. There, he edited the Pulitzer Prize winner, Bearing the Cross, the Biography of Martin Luther King Jr. by David Garrow. When he retired from publishing, Bruce wrote two important books on military history namely Pearl Harbor: Final Judgment with Henry Clausen and Marching Orders: The Untold Story of World War II. The latter involved some 30 years of research, including studying numerous pages of records from the Army archives and interviewing many veterans from the 12th Army and other units. He also served as Chairman of the Board for his family business LDG INC. Bruce loved to sail and fish. He was a member of The Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club, The Royal Northern and Clyde, the New York Yacht Club and The Royal Yacht Squadron. He served on the US Olympic Committee (Yachting), when the US won a gold medal in the 1972 Olympics. Bruce loved to race his 35-foot boat Wissahickon, a McCurdy & Rhodes Design, on Long Island Sound. In 1998, he was pleased that Wissahickon tied with the Admiral's Cup boat, Blue Yankee for first place in the YRA Season Championship. When he gave up racing, he enjoyed cruising in his Jarvis Newman lobster boat, Canard. Bruce was very proud to sponsor the Lee Family Trophy which celebrated 17 years over Columbus Day weekend. A Thanksgiving Service for Bruce's life is being planned to take place later this year at Christ Church in Oyster Bay. Donations in Bruce's memory may be made to DrivenToCure.org

So often over this last year I have stopped to think about Uncle Bruce and how his life and talents touched all of us. A brilliant writer, photographer, sailor, business man, with such appreciation of music and the finer things in life. A wonderful Uncle to us. We all miss him so much xx

Many warm thoughts and love to Janetta and the children. Some of my most wonderful memories are of sailing with Bruce in Oyster Bay, hearing his stories and keen sense of humor, and laughter. A very special person. Rest in Peace, dear Bruce.

To the Bruce Lee extended family: You have my sincere and heartfelt condolences at the passing of your father, Bruce Lee, who had such an amazing and interesting career in publishing and editing, as well in racing yachts. He clearly led a very full and impactful life, which I am sure must have provided for great pride from his family. Please know that you are in my thoughts -- and my heart -- at this difficult time.

With my deepest sympathies.

My wonderful and extraordinary Uncle Bruce.
I am going to miss him so much. All his incredible achievements and his generosity in imparting so much much of his wisdom and life experience made him such as important influence in my life.
He gave me my first proper camera when I was 18 that was pivotal in my fine art practice. He gave me me a Leatherman when I started my career in Set Design which I still carry everywhere.
He taught me how to shuck an oyster, how to eat a lobster, and how to open a bottle of champagne. Important life skills. I will never forget giggling with him on the jetty at Seawanaka after my first Long Island Ice Tea.
The love between Uncle Bruce and Aunt Janetta was beautiful to behold and be around.
Sending all our love and thoughts to Janetta, Tiger and Evalyn and all the family
