CARL FISCHER Obituary

FISCHER--Carl. Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grand- father, Carl Fischer died April 7, 2023 with family at his side at his home in New York City. Photographer and graphic designer, he was the creator of many iconic photographs which helped define the times in the 1960s and 1970s. Born May 3, 1924 and raised in Brooklyn, he graduated from The Cooper Union and studied at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London as a Fulbright Fellow. His work is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art and many others. Our mother Marilyn (Wolf), his wife of 59 years, died in 2017, daughter-in-law Leslie Pope died in 2020. He is survived by three children, Kim Alison, Douglas James, Kenneth Lee and daughter-in-law Robin Cohen; four grandchildren, Richard and Alice Lloyd George, Samantha and Scott Fischer; granddaughter-in-law Kate Lloyd George (Drummond); great-grand- children Astrid and Daphne Lloyd George. His family lived in the apartment above his studio in a beautiful turn of the century carriage house on East 83rd Street. Coming home after school to see the likes of Muhammad Ali, Andy Warhol, Walt Frazier or Woody Allen being photographed were exciting days, but not uncommon. The New York Times wrote an obituary about our father which can be seen at: nytimes.com/ 2023/04/11/arts/carl-fischer-de ad.html Our father was generous, funny, vigorous, sweet and loving. A no nonsense guy with a wonderful sense of humor and wide-ranging interests. He was a serious man but never took himself too seriously. He worked hard, and loved it. He loved design and theater, read widely - the day did not start without The New York Times. He loved Shakespeare, Bach, Einstein, Richard Feynman and George Carlin. He said to me as I was leaving for college, "above all, to thine own self be true". My friend and I snickered at that as I recall, but I learned over time there could be no better advice, and no greater gift. It's how he led his life. Please direct any donations or remembrances in his his name to The Cooper Union in New York City.
