HARBART--Carl. With great sadness, our family announces the passing of beloved partner, brother, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend Carl Harbart on October 19, 2022 at the age of 87. Carl was born on January 29, 1935 to Madeline and Adolf Harbart in Woodhaven, Queens. He attended Brooklyn Technical High School and then Pratt Institute where he received a BA in Interior Design. He went on to receive a Master's Degree from Columbia University, Teachers College in 1963, where he studied under Margaret Mead and joined her Explorer's Club. Through this he received tutorial grants to study cultures and architecture around the world, making friends throughout his travels and always inviting them back to New York to visit. As a Founder and Partner of The New York Planning Corp., an architecture and urban design company, he designed luxury spaces like the first Gucci storefront in Manhattan. He later established his own interior design firm with his work featured in Architectural Digest. He went on to become an art teacher at Bay Shore High School in Long Island. A gifted photographer with a collection of over 30,000 slides, he lectured about his travels, inspiring his students to explore the world and learn about culture, art, and architecture. He was active in city planning, and was a member of several civic, transportation, and education groups, regularly attending, and lecturing at, conferences around the country. Carl was also involved with a group that advocated for the development of the High Line in Manhattan, and in the creation of several community gardens. Carl visited every country that he could legally access, often bringing his children with him. He also took great pride in his German heritage, fondly reminiscing at family gatherings and sharing stories about his adventures with his grandchildren. Carl is survived by Gail Baum, his loving partner for over fifty years, June Evans, his first wife, their son Warren Harbart and their daughter Wendy Beyer, his grandchildren Sara, Jack, and Zoe, and by many loving relatives. He will be laid to rest in a private family service at All Saints Lutheran Cemetery. A Celebration of Life remembrance will take place next Spring.
